Kyrsten Sinema Wants to Make a Deal with GOP Senator: ‘Choose a Hostage That Is Appropriate’

Kyrsten ‍Sinema ‍Aims to Resolve‍ GOP Senator’s Hold on Military Promotions

Independent Senator Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona is ‍actively working to find a bipartisan solution to⁢ address Republican Senator ​Tommy Tuberville’s hold on military promotions.

Over the past nine months, Senator Tuberville has been ​protesting the Pentagon’s new abortion travel‍ policy, which provides funding for service members to travel for abortions. This policy change came after the ​Supreme Court’s ​decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, returning the authority over abortion laws to individual states.

According to Politico, Senator Sinema, who supports abortion rights, has ⁣been engaging in back-channel⁢ discussions with ‌Senator Tuberville to find a resolution that allows the military promotions to ‍proceed ⁤more efficiently.

“I still hope not ​to have to use a resolution,” Sinema stated. “The best way for this to ⁣be resolved is ⁢for Coach to choose a hostage⁢ that is appropriate.”

Sinema has been collaborating with Armed Services ​Chair Senator Jack Reed on a⁣ standing order resolution, which has the support of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. This resolution would bypass the need for a Senate rule⁤ change and ​only requires⁤ 60 votes for approval.

However, Sinema will need to find Republicans willing‍ to join her and the Democrats, who hold a slim majority in the Senate, to move forward with this plan.

“In the Senate, one senator can slow a nominee for any reason, even when it comes to ‌the military,” explained Politico.

While Tuberville has suggested considering promotions one at a time as a way to‍ bypass his hold, this approach would consume significant Senate floor time that could be used for other important ​matters, such as approving judicial nominees and Biden administration appointments.

According to The Hill, tensions escalated on the Senate floor ​when Tuberville blocked an‍ attempt by ⁣several Republican senators to move 115 military nominees without floor ‌votes.

Tuberville expressed his desire to resolve the issue but emphasized the need to address the Pentagon’s ⁢abortion travel policy. “I’m not ⁢lifting my holds. There are some ways around this, ⁢and we’re going to explain them to you a little bit later,” he told reporters.

As of now, no Republicans have endorsed Sinema’s plan to move military nominees ⁣forward with a group vote, as reported by Politico.
