A shocking lawsuit has been filed against former Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow, accusing him of drugging and raping a woman.
The courageous woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, has filed a lawsuit against Portnow, alleging that he drugged and sexually assaulted her in a New York hotel in 2018. She is also holding the Academy accountable, citing their “negligence” in the matter.
According to reports, the lawsuit was filed in New York State Supreme Court on Wednesday by an unidentified woman. She is described as an internationally renowned instrumentalist who has performed at Carnegie Hall.
Jeffrey R. Anderson, the prosecutor’s attorney, spoke out about the case:
“[Portnow] is not only betraying the trust of every woman and musician who has been oppressed by him and others, but he is also exposing the dark reality of the music and entertainment industry’s hypocrisy when it comes to rape and abuse,” Anderson said.
The Academy has released a statement expressing their belief that the claims are baseless and they will vigorously defend themselves in court.
Portnow’s representative has vehemently denied the allegations, calling them “completely false.” In a statement, he accused the plaintiff of fabricating the accusations due to Portnow’s refusal to comply with her outrageous demands for money and assistance with obtaining a residence visa.
The lawsuit details how Portnow and the woman met at an Academy event in January 2018 and then again in June of the same year at a hotel in Manhattan. The woman claims that Portnow offered her a glass of wine, but did not drink any himself. Shortly after consuming the wine, she began to feel disoriented.
The lawsuit further alleges that Portnow told the woman, “I have been thinking about you for a very long time,” and claimed there were no available cabs to take her home before she passed out. It is alleged that Portnow raped the woman that night, with her waking up multiple times to find him assaulting her.
The lawsuit also describes how Portnow ignored the woman’s attempts to contact him after the assault, leading her to file a police complaint. However, the district attorney’s office chose not to press charges.
These shocking allegations first came to light when Portnow’s successor revealed in 2020 that he had left the company following the incident in 2018.

How does this lawsuit shed light on the industry’s response to sexual assault cases and the treatment of victims
To pursue criminal charges against Portnow, citing a lack of evidence.
The plaintiff’s attorney, Jeffrey R. Anderson, criticized the music and entertainment industry for its handling of sexual assault cases. He argues that Portnow’s actions not only betray the trust of the victims but also expose the industry’s hypocrisy when it comes to rape and abuse. Anderson believes that this lawsuit will shed light on the dark reality of the industry and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
In response to the lawsuit, the Academy released a statement refuting the claims and expressing their belief that they are baseless. They vow to vigorously defend themselves in court against these allegations. On the other hand, Portnow’s representative vehemently denies the accusations, labeling them as “completely false.” Portnow suggests that the plaintiff fabricated these allegations due to his refusal to comply with her demands for money and assistance with obtaining a residence visa.
The lawsuit provides a detailed account of the alleged incident. The plaintiff states that she met Portnow at an Academy event in January 2018 and later encountered him again in June of the same year at a Manhattan hotel. According to the plaintiff, Portnow offered her a glass of wine, which she consumed while he did not drink any himself. Shortly after drinking the wine, the plaintiff claims to have felt disoriented.
It is alleged that Portnow took advantage of the plaintiff’s vulnerable state. He allegedly told her, “I have been thinking about you for a very long time,” and convinced her that there were no available cabs to take her home. The next morning, the plaintiff woke up multiple times to find Portnow assaulting her.
The lawsuit also highlights how Portnow ignored the plaintiff’s attempts to contact him after the assault, leading her to file a police complaint. However, the district attorney’s office decided not to pursue criminal charges against Portnow, citing insufficient evidence.
This lawsuit brings attention to the issue of sexual assault within the music and entertainment industry. It raises important questions about the industry’s response to such allegations and the protection of victims. Regardless of the outcome of this case, it serves as a reminder that the fight against sexual assault and the support of survivors should always be a priority.
