Belmont University freshman fatally shot by recently released mentally incompetent criminal: Police.
A Tragic Shooting at Belmont University
A freshman at Nashville‘s Belmont University experienced a horrifying incident when she was shot in the head by a man with a history of violence. The 18-year-old student, Jillian Ludwig, was walking near the campus when she was struck by a stray bullet. The suspect, Shaquille Taylor, had previously been jailed for aggravated assault but was released due to mental incompetence.
Authorities arrested Taylor and charged him with aggravated assault and evidence tampering. The bond was set at $280,000. The tragic incident occurred when Taylor was shooting at a car, and the bullet unintentionally hit Ludwig as she walked on a nearby track. The Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed the details of the shooting.

Despite being shot at 2:24 pm, Ludwig was not discovered until around 3:30 pm when a passerby noticed her and called the police. She was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away during the night.
According to court records, Taylor has a lengthy criminal history, including previous assault charges and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In 2021, he was accused of shooting into a car with a woman and two children inside. However, due to his mental incompetence, the case was dismissed, and Taylor was released.
Jillian Ludwig passed away. A stray bullet killed her when she was just simply walking in a park Tuesday afternoon.
I asked her aunt if there’s more I can do to help and she said,

Just a few months later, Taylor was charged with felony auto theft after being caught driving a car that had been carjacked. He was released on bond but failed to appear in court.
Nashville District Attorney General Glenn Funk criticized the state’s law regarding involuntary commitment, calling for a change to better balance individual needs and public safety. Newly elected Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell also expressed concern about the gap between incompetence to stand trial and the release of potentially dangerous individuals.
🎙️ At today’s media roundtable, @freddieoconnell talked about the “loophole” that allowed Taylor back on the street. Here was part of his response:
“I definitely think it is worth looking at the gap that exists between someone who is deemed incompetent to stand trial, and yet…

O’Connell also raised concerns about the possibility of murder charges being dismissed under similar circumstances. The tragic shooting at Belmont University highlights the flaws in the criminal legal system and the limited access to mental health treatment.
“Doctors have previously deemed the suspected shooter to be incompetent to stand trial,” O’Connell remarked, emphasizing the need for change to prevent future acts of senseless gun violence.
What immediate actions can be taken to implement stricter gun control measures and prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands
Faces justice and no other family goes through what we are going through.” I’ll do my best.
