Imagine “American Idol” without Simon Cowell. That’s what the Republican presidential primary debates have been like without former President Donald Trump. And the ratings speak for themselves.
In August, Trump made the decision to skip the debates, citing his overwhelming lead in the polls. On Wednesday night, five other GOP hopefuls took the stage in Miami to make their case for the nomination. However, while they fought for attention and viral moments, the disinterested audience was tuning out in droves.
The lackluster debate only managed to attract a measly 7.5 million viewers, a 46 percent drop from the 2016 debate that featured Trump and nine other candidates.

This decline in viewership follows a concerning trend, with each debate attracting fewer viewers than the last. The first GOP debate on Fox News in August drew in 13 million viewers, which dropped to 9.5 million for the second debate in September.
The ratings are even worse among the key 25-54 demographic, with only 1.3 million viewers tuning in for the NBC debate. Despite this, NBC News claimed it was their second most-watched Republican primary debate in history.
It’s clear that no other GOP contender comes close to Trump in terms of popularity and viewer interest. The people have spoken, and they’re voting with their remotes.
These declining ratings align with a recent Rasmussen poll that found a majority of GOP voters wanted to end the debates. With the fourth primary debate scheduled for December, perhaps it’s time for Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel to consider canceling it.
