Los Angeles commuters are facing the aftermath of a massive fire that erupted beneath the I-10 Freeway, one of the busiest in the country.
Mayor Karen Bass has labeled the situation a “crisis” for a city already notorious for its traffic congestion. She urges commuters to expect delays and plan alternative routes while the interstate remains closed in both directions near Alameda Street in downtown LA.
The I-10 Freeway sees over 300,000 drivers daily and is currently shut down in both directions. While authorities have suggested alternate routes, there is no specified timeline for reopening this major route through downtown Los Angeles.
“This was a massive fire and the damage won’t be fixed overnight,” Bass stated during a news conference on Monday morning. “Engineers have been working tirelessly to determine our next steps.”
Mayor Bass stated on Sunday, ”There’s no reason to believe this will be resolved in a few days.”
“We cannot provide an estimated time right now,” Bass said regarding the reopening of the freeway.
Bass warns commuters to expect severe traffic congestion similar to the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, which caused multiple freeways in the Los Angeles area to collapse.
“For those who remember the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Caltrans worked around the clock to make emergency repairs to the freeways — and this structural damage requires the same level of urgency and effort,” Bass emphasized.
The fire broke out beneath the 10 Freeway shortly after midnight on Saturday, engulfing numerous wood pallets, trailers, and vehicles stored below the raised interstate, according to law enforcement officials.
Thick smoke and flames filled the sky, posing a significant challenge to over 160 firefighters who battled the fire for three hours. It spread across an area equivalent to six football fields before being brought under control.
