Arrest Made in Death of Former NHL Player Adam Johnson
Last month, the tragic death of former NHL player Adam Johnson during a U.K. professional hockey league game shocked the sports world. Now, an opposing player has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with Johnson’s death.
Johnson, 29, suffered a fatal neck injury when he was struck by a skate during a game between his team, the Nottingham Panthers, and the Sheffield Steelers on October 28. The incident, which was captured on video, sent shockwaves through the hockey community.
The player charged in Johnson’s death has not been named, but it is believed to be Matt Petgrave, according to Sports Illustrated.
After being hit, Johnson desperately tried to make it to his team’s bench while clutching his injured neck. Tragically, he collapsed on the ice and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
“We have been carrying out extensive inquiries to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall of the South Yorkshire Police.
“Adam’s death has sent shockwaves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world,” Horsfall added. “We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness, and sensitivity as any other.”
The tragic incident has sparked a debate about player safety in hockey. In an inquest into Johnson’s death, coroner Tanyka Rawden recommended that neck guards be mandated in the sport, as reported by the BBC.
The Elite Ice Hockey League, to which the Panthers and Steelers belong, has ”strongly encouraged” the use of neck guards but has not made them mandatory. However, the English Ice Hockey Association, a lower-level league, will require neck guards starting next year.
While criminal prosecution in sports is rare, the incident has raised questions about the responsibility of aggressive players. Hogan & Hogan, a U.S. law firm, explained that players assume the risk of injury in the game, but actions that would be considered criminal outside of the sport can still have devastating consequences.
Adam Johnson had a successful career in the NHL, playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as well as in other leagues around the world. His death has left a void in the hockey community, and tributes have poured in from teams and fans.
Earlier this month, a celebration of Johnson’s life was held in his hometown of Hibbs, Minnesota, where thousands gathered to honor his memory.
Should aggressive players be liable for deaths?
