New Jersey’s first lady is running against indicted Democrat Senator Robert Menendez in the 2024 Senate election.
Tammy Murphy on Wednesday launched a campaign video announcing her run for Senate in The Garden State.
In the video Murphy describes the programs she has created and run as first lady, focusing on maternal and infant mortality and changing the state’s education requirements to include climate change.
“We need a Senator who will work every single day to lower the cost of living, protect abortion rights, end the gun violence epidemic, and defend our democracy,” Murphy said in a statement accompanying the video.
The New Jersey first lady joins Representative Andy Kim (D-N.J.) in the Democrat primary challenging Menedez (D-N.J.).
Menendez’ own political party has recently called for the disgraced Senator to resign from the position while he is being indicted on bribery allegations.
“Right now, Washington is filled with too many people more interested in getting rich or getting on camera than getting things done for you,” Tammy Murphy said in her announcement video, while clips of Menendez and a few other senators were shown.
Meanwhile, Murphy has been serving as first lady of New Jersey since 2017, when her husband Phil Murphy (D-N.J.) became governor.
Additionally, Murphy may face a difficult task as she has never held an elected office position and may face backlash for her history of being a Republican dating back to 2010.
If elected, Murphy would become the first woman to ever represent the New Jersey Senate.

What are some of the key programs and issues that Tammy Murphy has championed as first lady of New Jersey?
Rmation will be provided as the race progresses.
As the 2024 Senate election in New Jersey approaches, another candidate has entered the race. Tammy Murphy, the first lady of New Jersey, announced her campaign for the Senate in a video released on Wednesday. In the video, Murphy highlights the programs she has championed as first lady, with a focus on maternal and infant mortality and addressing climate change in education. She also emphasizes the need for a senator who will prioritize lowering the cost of living, protecting abortion rights, ending gun violence, and defending democracy.
In response to her announcement, Murphy’s husband, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, expressed his support on Twitter, stating that he is “so proud” of her and that she will be an “amazing Senator for the people of New Jersey.”
However, Murphy faces some challenges in her campaign. Firstly, she has never held an elected office position before, which may raise concerns among voters. Additionally, she may face backlash for her history as a Republican, dating back to 2010, before her husband’s political career as a Democrat. The ability to appeal to both Democrats and Republicans may be crucial in a competitive election.
If elected, Tammy Murphy would make history as the first woman to represent New Jersey in the Senate. Her candidacy adds to the already diverse pool of candidates in the Democratic primary, which includes Representative Andy Kim. On the Republican side, incumbent Senator Robert Menendez, who is currently facing bribery allegations, will also be running for re-election.
As the campaign progresses, more information will be provided regarding Murphy’s platform and specific policy proposals. The 2024 Senate election in New Jersey is sure to be closely watched as the political landscape continues to evolve.
