Former first lady Rosalynn Carter is now reportedly receiving hospice care at her residence in Plains, Georgia, due to her struggle with dementia.
The Carter Center made the announcement on Friday, revealing that Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady, is now under hospice care at her residence in Plains, Georgia. This decision was made due to her ongoing battle with dementia.
The announcement comes after her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, entered home hospice care in February. The couple, who celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July, holds the record for being the longest-married presidential couple.
“She and President Carter are spending time with each other and their family. The Carter family continues to ask for privacy and remains grateful for the outpouring of love and support,” Jason Carter, the Carters’ grandson, said in the statement released by the Center.
In May, the Center disclosed that Rosalynn Carter had been diagnosed with dementia. No further details about her health were provided in the Center’s recent announcement.
President Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981 and currently holds the title of the oldest-living American president.
Since leaving the White House, Rosalynn and Jimmy have remained active and dedicated to philanthropy, particularly through their work at the Carter Center.
The couple has four children together, three sons and one daughter. They are also proud grandparents to 12 grandchildren and great-grandparents to 14 children, according to the Jimmy Carter Library.
