The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has made a bold move by unveiling a hard-hitting attack ad aimed at Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ). Recent polls have indicated that Sinema poses a greater threat to the Republican candidate in the upcoming 2024 elections.
The 30-second ad pulls no punches, labeling Gallego as “rotten” and accusing him of abandoning his pregnant wife to marry a D.C. lobbyist.
This attack could be a risky strategy for the committee, considering Gallego’s background as a former U.S. Marine and Iraq War veteran. He has attributed the end of his first marriage to mental struggles following his deployment. According to Politico, Gallego and his ex-wife Kate Gallego are now on good terms. Furthermore, he has been seen with his 6-year-old son both in Congress and on the campaign trail as recently as last month.
While targeting Gallego, the ad also links Sinema, a Democrat-turned-independent, to President Joe Biden and his agenda.
“Sinema voted for President Biden’s agenda 100% of the time, backed Biden’s green energy bill, and even helped pass Biden’s American Rescue Plan,” the ad claims.
This ad comes in response to polling data suggesting that Sinema’s candidacy poses a greater threat to Republican candidate Kari Lake in the 2024 Arizona Senate race, compared to Gallego. It remains uncertain whether Sinema will run for reelection.
“Deadbeat dad or liberal Democrat? Arizonans deserve a better choice,” the ad concludes.
NRSC spokesman Tate Mitchell expressed the committee’s stance, stating, “National Democrats are engaged in a lose-lose civil war over who they’ll choose as their standard-bearer: Rotten Ruben Gallego or liberal rubber-stamp Kyrsten Sinema. Arizonans deserve better.”
The Arizona Senate race is a significant opportunity for Republicans to gain ground in 2024 and could determine which party controls the upper chamber. According to the Cook Political Report, Sinema’s seat is currently rated as a “toss-up.”
