Texas Woman Sentenced to 90 Years in Prison for Killing Professional Cyclist in Love Triangle
A Texas woman, Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, has been sentenced to 90 years in prison for the murder of professional cyclist Anna Moriah ”Mo” Wilson. The sentencing took place in Austin, Texas, following Armstrong’s conviction for fatally shooting Wilson in May 2022. The jury deliberated for three hours before recommending the lengthy prison term, which was accepted by Judge Brenda Kennedy.
“Other than the prosecution team, there really are no winners here,” said the victim’s father, according to NBC News. “This is not a time for celebration but a time for prayer, a time to pray for our family, her friends, and the Armstrong family and their friends.”
The motive behind the murder was Armstrong’s jealousy over Wilson briefly dating her on-again-off-again boyfriend, professional cyclist Colin Strickland. Strickland testified at the trial about Armstrong’s jealousy and their tumultuous relationship.
According to ABC News, Strickland revealed that he once loved Armstrong but had doubts about a long-term relationship with her, which caused tension. Despite taking breaks in their relationship, the couple lived together. During these breaks, Armstrong would confront Strickland if she discovered he was talking to other women.
In October 2021, Strickland met Wilson at a cycling race in Bentonville, Arkansas. Shortly after the race, Strickland and Armstrong broke up. Strickland then began dating Wilson when she visited Austin for a race. However, Armstrong confronted Wilson about the relationship, which surprised Strickland since he hadn’t informed Armstrong about Wilson. Although Wilson and Strickland stopped dating when she left Austin, they remained friends.
Strickland and Armstrong reconciled in December 2021. During this time, Strickland maintained professional contact with Wilson, discussing gear, races, and sponsorship opportunities. To avoid conflict with Armstrong, Strickland deleted his messages with Wilson and changed her name in his phone.
On May 11, 2022, Strickland spent the day with Wilson, swimming, eating burgers, and enjoying each other’s company. He dropped her off at a friend’s house without informing Armstrong. However, Armstrong had access to Strickland’s messages through his Apple account.
The following day, police informed Strickland that Wilson had been murdered. Initially questioned, Strickland soon became a witness as police focused their investigation on Armstrong.
“According to a witness, Armstrong expressed a desire to kill Wilson in January 2022, based on a personal grievance,” stated an affidavit filed in relation to the case, according to the Boston Globe. “A surveillance camera recorded what appears to be Armstrong’s vehicle near the scene of the murder at the approximate time.”
The affidavit also mentioned that Armstrong’s pistol, which matched the shell casings found at the crime scene, was discovered during a search of her home.
Wilson, a former star skier turned cyclist, was known for her talent in ”gravel racing,” a sport combining road cycling and mountain biking. She was expected to win a 157-mile race on May 14 but tragically lost her life on May 11.
After the murder, Armstrong attempted to evade capture by fleeing to Costa Rica. She flew from Austin to Houston, then to New York, and finally to Costa Rica. A warrant for her arrest was issued on May 18, the same day she arrived in Costa Rica. On May 25, she was charged with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Armstrong was eventually found at a hostel in Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas, according to the Globe.

How did Armstrong’s jealousy and resentment towards Wilson manifest in their relationship?
Icts, Strickland established boundaries with Armstrong, making it clear that he would not cut off contact with Wilson. This further fueled Armstrong’s jealousy and resentment.
On the night of May 16, 2022, Armstrong tracked Wilson down to her apartment complex in Austin. Armed with a handgun, Armstrong confronted Wilson in the parking lot. An argument ensued, during which Armstrong shot Wilson multiple times, fatally wounding her. Witnesses called the police, who arrived at the scene and arrested Armstrong.
Throughout the trial, the prosecution painted a picture of Armstrong as a manipulative and possessive individual consumed by jealousy. They presented evidence of Armstrong’s history of violent behavior and obsession over Strickland. This, combined with the testimonies of witnesses and Strickland himself, left little doubt in the minds of the jurors about Armstrong’s guilt.
The defense attempted to argue that Armstrong was acting in self-defense, claiming that Wilson had attacked her first. However, the evidence presented, including surveillance footage and witness statements, contradicted this claim. The jury ultimately found Armstrong guilty of first-degree murder.
Judge Brenda Kennedy, known for her strict stance on violent crimes, handed down the maximum sentence of 90 years in prison. In her conclusion, she emphasized the severity of the crime and the need for justice to be served.
The tragedy of this case extends beyond the loss of Anna Wilson’s life. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of jealousy, obsession, and possessiveness within relationships. It is a call to address and address toxic behaviors and emotions that can have devastating consequences.
The victim’s father’s statement during the sentencing reflects the pain and sadness experienced by both families involved. In the midst of grief, he reminds us to focus on compassion and empathy, acknowledging that no one truly wins in this situation.
As this case comes to a close, the hope is that it will serve as a cautionary tale and encourage individuals to seek healthy ways of dealing with jealousy and possessiveness. It is a reminder that taking a life is never the solution, and that every life is precious and deserving of respect.
In memory of Anna “Mo” Wilson, her friends, family, and the cycling community, let us work towards creating a world where love, respect, and understanding prevail over jealousy and violence. May this tragic event spur us all to take a closer look at our own relationships and strive for healthy and nurturing connections.
