Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has made a significant arrest on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. They have apprehended an illegal immigrant from Brazil.
ICE has captured 37-year-old Saulo Cardona Ferreira, a Brazilian fugitive who had been evading a prison sentence for allegedly raping a five-year-old child.
In 2019, Ferreira was convicted of multiple sexual assaults on the child and was sentenced to 14 years in prison. However, he managed to flee the country before being apprehended.
During a stop in the luxurious vacation destination of Martha’s Vineyard, ICE’s Fugitive Operations Team successfully captured him.
According to an ICE spokesman, the agency launched an investigation and detained Ferreira near his residence on November 14th after discovering his possible presence in the area through a law enforcement data review in September.
Todd Lyons, the Boston Field Office Director of ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), also released a statement emphasizing the threat Ferreira posed to the residents of Martha’s Vineyard.
“He sexually assaulted a five-year-old child in his homeland and then ran from authorities when held accountable for his actions. ERO Boston will not allow such predators to threaten our residents. We will continue to apprehend and remove anyone who attempts to use our New England community as a refuge from justice,” Lyons stated.
The agency has not determined how Ferreira entered the U.S. illegally or when it occurred.
Ferreira is currently in custody, awaiting a court appearance before an immigration judge.
