House Dem Leaves Progressive Caucus In Break Over Israel
A House Democrat Parts Ways with Congressional Progressive Caucus over Israel-Hamas Conflict
A House Democrat has made the decision to leave the Congressional Progressive Caucus due to differing opinions on Israel’s war against Hamas. The news broke on Monday when Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL) departed from the caucus, citing disagreements on the Gaza Strip siege.
In a follow-up report on Tuesday, it was confirmed by Frankel’s office that she had indeed left the caucus. The decision was attributed to the way some members of the leftist caucus were responding to the Israel situation.
Frankel’s removal from the caucus’s online membership page was also noted by the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.
As a Jewish representative, Frankel expressed unwavering support for Israel following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas on Israeli soil. Her strong pro-Israel stance has put her at odds with members of the leftist “Squad,” who have criticized Israel and prompted primary challenges in the upcoming 2024 election cycle.
The chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), faced controversy and attempted to apologize after referring to Israel as a “racist state.”
While some Democrats have called for a ceasefire and expressed concerns about Palestinian civilian casualties, others have remained steadfast in their support for Israel’s fight against Hamas.

Frankel was one of the 22 Democrats who voted in favor of censuring Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), a member of the “Squad” and vice chairwoman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, for her rhetoric about Israel.
The censure resolution, which passed with significant GOP support, reprimanded Tlaib for promoting false narratives about the Hamas assault on Israel and for advocating for the destruction of the state of Israel.
In addition, Frankel joined forces with 11 other House Democrats and most Republicans to pass a plan that offset $14.3 billion in aid for Israel by cutting the same amount of funds meant for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

“The United States has a moral duty and national security urgency to aid Israel in defending herself,” stated Frankel during the vote. “Make no mistake, Hamas terrorists and others in the region are out to destroy Israel and kill all Jews. We must send an unequivocal message to the world that we stand with Israel.”
In what ways might the Israel-Hamas conflict serve as a test for lawmakers in reconciling their personal beliefs with the positions of their political affiliations
Er at odds with some members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, who have criticized Israel’s actions in the ongoing conflict.
The Israel-Hamas conflict has been a long-standing and complex issue, with deeply rooted historical, political, and religious dimensions. As news of the conflict has dominated headlines in recent weeks, it has sparked intense debate and differing opinions among lawmakers.
The decision by Rep. Frankel to part ways with the Congressional Progressive Caucus highlights the challenges faced by politicians when trying to reconcile their personal beliefs and values with the positions of their political affiliations. Frankel’s unwavering support for Israel may have put her in conflict with the more critical views of some of her fellow caucus members.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus is known for its progressive and left-leaning policies, which can sometimes lead to differing stances on foreign policy matters. In the case of the Israel-Hamas conflict, some members of the caucus have called for a more balanced approach or have voiced criticisms of Israel’s actions.
Frankel’s departure from the caucus is not only significant because of her pro-Israel stance, but also because it raises questions about the ability of caucuses and political groups to represent a diverse range of opinions within their ranks. In this instance, Frankel felt that she no longer aligned with the views and values of the caucus concerning Israel.
It is important to note that the decision by Frankel does not indicate a complete shift in her political ideology or party affiliation. As a Democrat, she may continue to share similar values and goals with the party, but simply could not reconcile her position on the Israel-Hamas conflict with that of the caucus.
The Israel-Hamas conflict remains a deeply divisive issue, both within Congress and among the general population. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by lawmakers in navigating foreign policy matters that often involve complex geopolitical dynamics and deeply held personal beliefs.
As the conflict continues to unfold, it is likely that more lawmakers will grapple with the difficult task of balancing their personal convictions and party loyalties. The departure of Rep. Frankel from the Congressional Progressive Caucus is just one example of the complexities and challenges faced by politicians when dealing with international conflicts like the one between Israel and Hamas.
