Democratic Stronghold Elects Republican Mayor for First Time Since the 1800s
Republican Mayor Elected in Democratic Stronghold for First Time in Over a Century
In a historic turn of events, the largest city in South Carolina has elected a Republican mayor for the first time since the late 1800s. The mayor’s office in Charleston is officially nonpartisan, but the incumbent and the new mayor-elect both have clear Republican affiliations. This victory is particularly stunning considering the city’s solid Democratic history.
The Charleston Post and Courier reports that William Cogswell, who ran as a self-described moderate, secured the win with 51.04 percent of the vote. Incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg received 48.96 percent. This outcome marks a significant shift in a city where every mayor since the late 1800s has either identified as a Democrat or been identified as such by others.
The crowd is chanting and cheering during this announcement. Everyone is celebrating. Numbers for 93% of the votes are in with Cogswell at 51% and Tecklenburg at 49%. pic.twitter.com/bdZgRJFNJP

The unofficial results show Cogswell as the winner, although the state’s Election Commission has yet to certify the results. However, Tecklenburg has already conceded and delivered a public concession speech.
What makes this victory even more remarkable is that Cogswell managed to win without resorting to the rancor and name-calling that often characterizes political campaigns. He ran a positive race and emphasized the need for the next generation and the next chapter in the city’s history.
With slightly over 30,000 votes cast in the runoff election, representing about 27 percent of the electorate, Cogswell, a real estate developer and former Statehouse representative, will take office in January.
A Note from Our Deputy Managing Editor:
I walked into the office one morning and noticed something strange. Half of The Western Journal’s readership was missing.
It had finally happened. Facebook had flipped THE switch.
Maybe it was because we wrote about ivermectin. Or election integrity. Or the Jan. 6 detainees. Or ballot mules.
Whatever the reason, I immediately knew what to do. We had to turn to you because, frankly, we know you are the only ones we can trust.
Can you help? Every donation to The Western Journal goes directly to funding our team of story researchers, writers and editors who doggedly pursue the truth and expose the corrupt elites.
Can I count on you for a small donation? We operate on a shoestring compared to other news media companies, so I can personally promise that not a penny of your donation will be wasted.
If you would rather become a WJ member outright, you can do that today as well.
We will use every single cent to fight against the lies and corruption in high places. And as long as we have your help, we will never give up.
Sincerely,

The election of a Republican mayor in Charleston, South Carolina, has broken a century-long streak of Democratic dominance in the city. William Cogswell secured the victory with 51.04 percent of the vote, defeating incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg. This outcome is particularly striking considering Charleston’s solid Democratic history.
Charleston, the largest city in South Carolina, has been known as a Democratic stronghold since the late 1800s. Every mayor since that time has either identified as a Democrat or has been recognized as such by others. The election of a Republican mayor marks a significant shift in the city’s political landscape.
Cogswell, a self-described moderate, ran a positive campaign focused on the need for progress and the next chapter in Charleston’s history. He emphasized the importance of the next generation and presented himself as a unifying candidate. His victory without resorting to name-calling and rancor highlights his commitment to a positive vision for the city.
The unofficial results show Cogswell as the winner, but the state’s Election Commission has yet to certify the results. However, Tecklenburg has already conceded and delivered a public concession speech, acknowledging Cogswell’s victory.
This historic election drew attention nationally, with a video on social media capturing the crowd’s jubilation during the announcement of Cogswell’s win. With over 30,000 votes cast in the runoff election, Cogswell secured his victory with 51 percent of the vote.
Cogswell, a real estate developer and former Statehouse representative, will take office in January. His election as a Republican mayor in a traditionally Democratic city signals a significant political shift and raises questions about the changing political dynamics in South Carolina.
The outcome of this election will undoubtedly have implications beyond Charleston, as it demonstrates that even in strongholds, political landscapes can evolve and adapt to new ideas and candidates. It serves as a reminder that no political party should take any constituency for granted, and that a positive vision and message can resonate with voters across party lines.
As the first Republican mayor in over a century, William Cogswell will face high expectations and challenges in leading Charleston. His election has already made history, and only time will tell the impact he will have on the city and the wider political landscape of South Carolina.
