Riots erupted in Dublin, ⁣Ireland’s capital, on Thursday evening and early Friday morning following a ⁣stabbing attack ⁣that left five people wounded, including three children and⁢ a school care assistant, in the city center.

According to NBC ⁢News, between 200 and 300 people participated in the‍ riots, setting fire to buses and police vehicles, ‌and causing public transportation to shut down.

Police have a suspect in custody,⁢ described as a man in his ⁣40s or 50s, but⁢ no ⁤further details have been provided.

According to Gript Media, the suspect ⁢is an Algerian⁣ national who arrived in Ireland several decades ago.

Rioters also targeted ⁢a local immigration center and looted stores, ‌as reported by Newsweek.

Ireland’s national police commissioner, Drew Harris, blamed a “complete lunatic faction driven by far-right‍ ideology” for the riots, as reported by The Irish News.

Helen McEntee, the country’s minister for justice, condemned the chaos and looting that followed the attacks, vowing ‍that ⁤it ‌”will not be tolerated.” She referred to the rioters as “thugs” and “criminals.”

“These are scenes that we have not ⁤seen in decades,” said Harris, as ⁢reported by Axios. “But ‍what is clear is that people ‌have been radicalized through social media over the internet.”

“Those involved brought shame on Dublin, brought ⁤shame on Ireland, and brought⁣ shame on their families and ‍themselves,” Varadkar stated at a news conference on‍ Friday, according to ‍ Reuters.

“As a country, we need to⁤ reclaim Ireland. We need to‌ take it away from the cowerers‌ who hide behind ‍masks and try to‍ terrify us with their violence,” ⁤Varadkar added.

According to the BBC, two of the stabbing ‍victims, a 5-year-old‍ girl and ‌a school assistant who shielded children from the attacker, are in critical‍ condition.
