Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney shocked the political world by declaring that he would vote for Democrats rather than supporting former President Donald J. Trump or entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.
During an interview on Friday with CBS’ Norah O’Donnell, Romney was asked about his support within the GOP.
“I’d be happy to support virtually any one of the Republicans, maybe not Vivek [Ramaswamy], but the others that are running would be acceptable to me, and I’d be happy to vote for them,” he said.
“I’d be happy to vote for a number of the Democrats, too. I mean, it would be an upgrade, in my opinion, from Donald Trump and perhaps also from Joe Biden,” Romney continued.
Ramaswamy wasted no time in responding to Romney’s remarks. He shared the sound clip from the interview on X page, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
This surprising statement from the former presidential candidate is consistent with his long-standing dislike of Trump. In 2020, he openly admitted to not voting for Trump during his re-election campaign. Furthermore, Romney voted in favor of Trump’s impeachment.

What impact could Mitt Romney’s endorsement of Democrats have on his political career and the broader political landscape in America
Mitt Romney, the former Republican presidential candidate, has made headlines by announcing his support for Democrats over former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. In an interview with CBS’ Norah O’Donnell, Romney expressed his willingness to vote for a number of Democrats, stating that it would be an upgrade from both Trump and Joe Biden.
Romney’s declaration comes as a surprise to many in the political world, as he has long been associated with the Republican Party. His decision to openly support Democrats reflects his dissatisfaction with the direction the party has taken under Trump’s leadership.
During the interview, Romney made it clear that he would be willing to support most of the Republicans running for office, with the exception of Vivek Ramaswamy. However, he also emphasized that he would be happy to vote for a number of Democrats, as he sees them as an improvement over both Trump and Biden.
Ramaswamy wasted no time in responding to Romney’s remarks. He shared a sound clip from the interview on X page, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. The response from Ramaswamy suggests that he was not surprised by Romney’s announcement and provides a link for further information.
Romney’s support for Democrats is likely to be met with mixed reactions within the Republican Party. While some may view it as a betrayal of party loyalty, others may see it as a principled stance against Trump’s controversial presidency. Regardless, Romney’s endorsement carries weight due to his standing within the party and his previous presidential run.
This latest development further highlights the deep divisions within the Republican Party and the ongoing struggle for its future direction. Romney’s decision to break ranks and openly support Democrats is a significant moment in American politics, and it remains to be seen how it will impact both his political career and the broader political landscape.
Overall, Mitt Romney’s announcement of support for Democrats over Trump and Ramaswamy signifies a break from his party’s traditional allegiances. While it may come as a surprise to many, it also underscores the challenges facing the Republican Party as it grapples with its identity in the post-Trump era.
