An Icon of Children’s Television Passes Away at 86
Marty Krofft, a legendary producer and co-creator of beloved children’s television shows such as “H.R. Pufnstuf” and ”Land of the Lost,” has died at the age of 86 in California. His passing was confirmed by his publicist B. Harlan Boll, who stated that Krofft was surrounded by loved ones and that the cause of death was kidney failure.
Krofft, along with his brother Sid, brought to life a series of imaginative and captivating shows starting from the 1960s. Their most popular creation, “H.R. Pufnstuf,” enchanted audiences with the story of a young boy and his friendship with a talking dragon named H.R. Pufnstuf on a magical island. The show, which premiered in 1969, was praised for its vibrant set design, puppetry, and catchy theme song.
Another success for the Krofft brothers was “Land of the Lost,” which debuted in 1974. This show followed a family’s adventures in a dimension ruled by dinosaurs, primates, and lizard creatures as they tried to find their way back home.

The Krofft brothers’ shows were known for their trippy and psychedelic nature, introducing vibrant colors and innovative concepts to young audiences. Marty Krofft once said in an interview, “We screwed with every kid’s mind. There’s a Krofft look—the colors. There’s an edge. Disney doesn’t have an edge.”
Aside from their iconic creations, the Krofft brothers also worked on shows like “Donny & Marie,” “The Brady Bunch Hour,” and “Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.”
Marty Krofft’s contributions to children’s television were recognized with numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2018 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2020.
He is survived by his brother Sid, his brother Harry, his daughters Deanna Krofft-Pope, Kristina, and Kendra Krofft, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
