Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) announced on Tuesday that he will be running for a third term in 2024 and intends to promote the accomplishments of the Biden administration during his campaign. When questioned by CNN host Kasie Hunt about any concerns regarding President Joe Biden’s ability to run his 2024 campaign and serve a second term, Kaine swiftly shut down the notion.
“I’m going to be a ticketmate of Joe Biden ‘cause I’m running in Virginia in 2024, and I am planning on running a very vigorous campaign promoting what the Biden administration has done,” Kaine said.
The former Democratic vice presidential nominee highlighted the significance of the “historic infrastructure bill and other accomplishments — manufacturing, veterans, gun safety,” and expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to secure electoral votes in Virginia.
However, recent polling data from Messenger-HarrisX revealed that 40% of Democratic voters believe Biden should not run for a second term. The same poll indicated that former President Donald Trump would defeat Biden by a 47%-40% margin if the election were held at that time.
When asked if he thought Biden could lose to Trump in the upcoming election, Kaine acknowledged the possibility, stating, “There’s no reason to be complacent in a nation that is divided like the U.S. is.”
Kaine referenced the recent “really successful election night in Virginia” for the Democratic Party, but emphasized the need to avoid taking anything for granted. He shared the sentiment that the Biden campaign and himself view the race with the same level of seriousness.
