Alex Murdaugh, ‍a previously convicted double murderer,⁣ pleads guilty to fraud and money laundering charges at Beaufort County Courthouse⁢ in South Carolina.

Today, Murdaugh receives the harshest sentence ever issued by the ‍state for white collar offenses, with a 27-year prison term, as reported by The State.

Murdaugh is charged with a total of 101 crimes, having stolen millions of dollars from friends,⁤ family, and legal⁤ clients.

Judge Clifton Newman approves Murdaugh’s guilty plea and the plea‍ agreement during today’s hearing.

During the hearing, Judge Newman delivers cutting remarks, referring⁣ to the sentence as “stern.”

“It’s ⁤so disappointing to see you again in this setting,” Newman says, also expressing that he takes “no joy at all in‌ imposing this sentence.”

Newman also describes Murdaugh as “empty,” but expresses hope that “something⁢ would emerge ‌within his ⁣soul.”

“Many of us do things that⁢ we shouldn’t ⁤do,” Newman states. “It’s just unimaginable — unimaginable to me that you have done some of the things that you’ve done. ⁢Whether it’s ‍you or⁣ someone you become upon using drugs or through the process of just committing the crimes over and ‌over ⁣over a period of years, I don’t know. I don’t ⁣know. I don’t even know who I’m speaking to now.”

Earlier⁢ this month, 55-year-old Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 counts, including fraud and money laundering, after being accused⁤ of stealing millions of ⁢dollars from his law firm and clients.

State Prosecutor Creighton Waters‍ describes the plea deal as⁣ a “unique and unprecedented sentence” for financial crimes, with ⁣no comparable example found throughout the country, whether state⁣ or federal.
