According to a statement from his brother, Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine carrying out a sentence in Russia on espionage charges, was attacked by another prisoner in a Russian facility.
When Whelan attempted to persuade a prisoner to move several times while they were both at a sewing workshop in a penal colony in Russia’s Mordovia region, he was then punched in the face and had to defend himself.
“A new prisoner blocked part of the production line and Paul asked him to move out of the way. After repeated requests, the prisoner hit Paul in the face, breaking Paul’s glasses in the process, and attempted to hit him a second time,” said Dave Whelan, his brother.
“Paul stood up to block the second hit, and other prisoners intervened to prevent the prisoner continuing the attack on Paul,” he continued.
Since Paul was an American and anti-American sentiment was “not uncommon among the other prisoners,” Dave expressed that he believed his brother had been targeted.
However, “Paul says he believes the prison administration is taking the attack seriously,” Dave Whelan said.
Paul Whelan was detained in Russia back in 2018 and sentenced to 16 years at a prison in Mordovia, a province southeast of Moscow. He was later found guilty of espionage, two years after his initial arrest.

What measures will the Russian authorities take to ensure the safety and well-being of Paul Whelan and his fellow prisoners following the recent attack?
“Former US Marine Paul Whelan Attacked in Russian Prison, Alleges Brother”
In a recent statement issued by his brother, it has been revealed that Paul Whelan, a former US Marine who is currently serving a sentence in Russia on espionage charges, was attacked by another prisoner in a Russian facility. The incident took place when Whelan attempted to convince a fellow prisoner to move several times during a sewing workshop at a penal colony in Russia’s Mordovia region. As tensions escalated, Whelan was subjected to a punch to the face and had to defend himself.
According to Dave Whelan, Paul’s brother, the altercation occurred after Paul asked the prisoner multiple times to clear the way. ”After repeated requests, the prisoner hit Paul in the face, breaking Paul’s glasses in the process, and attempted to hit him a second time,” Dave Whelan stated. In self-defense, Paul stood up to block the second hit, and other prisoners intervened to prevent the prisoner from continuing the attack.
Dave Whelan believes that his brother was targeted due to his American nationality and the prevalent anti-American sentiment among the other prisoners. However, he expressed confidence in the prison administration, stating that “Paul says he believes the prison administration is taking the attack seriously.”
Paul Whelan was detained in Russia in 2018 and subsequently sentenced to 16 years at a prison in Mordovia, a province located southeast of Moscow. His arrest and conviction on charges of espionage occurred two years after his initial detainment.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by foreign nationals imprisoned in countries with different legal systems and cultural environments. It underscores the importance of diplomatic efforts and international cooperation to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals detained abroad.
As the situation unfolds, it is crucial to monitor the response of the Russian authorities and the actions taken to address the issue. The well-being of Paul Whelan and his fellow prisoners should be of utmost importance, and efforts must be made to prevent further acts of violence and ensure a safe environment within the prison.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding human rights and maintaining the dignified treatment of individuals, regardless of their legal status. As the international community continues to advocate for fair treatment and due process, it is imperative to support efforts that promote justice and respect for human rights, both within national boundaries and across borders.
In the coming days, it will be essential to closely monitor any developments in this case and the measures taken to address the concerns raised by Paul Whelan’s family. As a global society, we must strive for a world where individuals are treated fairly, regardless of their circumstances or nationalities, and where incidents of violence and mistreatment are swiftly addressed and rectified.
