Fans outraged over major omission in College Football Playoff field
Robbery? College Football Playoff Field Is Set… But Fans Are Furious About 1 Major Omission
The College Football Playoff committee has made their selection for the four teams competing for the national championship this year. And as expected, controversy surrounds the decision.
It was inevitable given that there were six teams vying for four spots in the playoffs. However, this won’t be an issue next year when the playoff field expands to include 12 teams.
According to ESPN, the four teams that made the cut are:
- The University of Michigan Wolverines
- The University of Washington Huskies
- The University of Texas Longhorns
- The University of Alabama Crimson Tide
Unfortunately, the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Florida State University Seminoles did not make it.
The Bulldogs’ exclusion is controversial, considering they are a one-loss two-time defending national champion aiming for a three-peat. However, their loss to the Crimson Tide in the SEC championship game played a role in their omission.
On the other hand, the omission of FSU is causing stronger emotions. The Seminoles finished the season undefeated with a 13-0 record and won the ACC championship. This makes them the first unbeaten Power 5 conference champion to miss out on the CFP.
ACC commissioner Jim Phillips expressed his disappointment, questioning the selection process and the committee’s adherence to their own guidelines. Fans, including rival University of Miami fans, also voiced their outrage on social media.
The reason behind FSU’s snub likely involves the loss of their star quarterback Jordan Travis to a season-ending injury in mid-November.
Michigan, the top-seeded team, even showed disappointment when they learned they would be facing Alabama instead of a Travis-less FSU in the opening round of the playoffs.
Michigan will face Alabama in the Rose Bowl, while Texas will play Washington in the Sugar Bowl. Both games will take place on New Year’s Day, with the CFP National Championship scheduled for Monday, Jan. 8.
All games will be televised on ESPN.

How do Ohio State fans feel about being excluded from the playoffs and do they believe the selection process was fair?

While the selection of these teams isn’t necessarily surprising, the omission of one particular team has left many fans furious: The Ohio State Buckeyes. The Ohio State Buckeyes finished the season with a strong record of 11-2, including an impressive win over Michigan. They were also ranked sixth in the College Football Playoff rankings leading up to the final selection. However, the committee ultimately chose to leave them out of the playoffs in favor of the other four teams. Needless to say, Ohio State fans are not happy. Many believe that the Buckeyes deserved a spot in the playoffs based on their performance throughout the season. They argue that the committee’s decision is a robbery, favoring other teams over a well-deserving Ohio State team. This controversy brings into focus the subjectivity inherent in the selection process. While the committee claims to use objective criteria such as strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and conference championships, there is always room for disagreement and interpretation. Ultimately, it is up to the committee to decide which teams they believe are the best and most deserving of a playoff spot. However, it is worth noting that this issue will likely be resolved next year with the expansion of the playoff field. With 12 teams instead of four, the committee will have more flexibility in selecting teams, reducing the chances of leaving out deserving teams like Ohio State. It’s also important to remember that college football playoffs have always been controversial. There will always be teams and fans who feel slighted by the selection process. The current controversy surrounding Ohio State is just one example of this ongoing debate. So while fans may be furious about the omission of the Ohio State Buckeyes, it’s important to recognize that the selection process is not perfect. The committee does their best to select the most deserving teams each year, but there will always be those who disagree with their decisions. In the end, the College Football Playoff field is set, and the four chosen teams will have the opportunity to compete for the national championship. While fans may be disappointed, they can still look forward to an exciting and competitive postseason. But for now, the controversy surrounding Ohio State will continue to stir debate and highlight the imperfections of the current selection process.
