India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi Poised for Third Term
After nearly a decade in power, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continue to enjoy widespread popularity among the public. Recent polls suggest that Modi is likely to be reelected for a third term in 2024.
State Elections Favor Modi’s Hindu Nationalist Party
Results from state elections indicate that India’s popular Hindu nationalist party has emerged victorious in three out of four states, further bolstering Modi’s chances of securing a third consecutive term as prime minister.
- Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan states have come under the control of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, defeating the Indian National Congress.
- Madhya Pradesh, a central Indian state, has reelected Modi for a fifth term.
- The Bharatiya Janata Party easily won in Telangana, despite opposition from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi.
- Vote counting is still underway in Mizoram, where the Bharatiya Janata Party’s regional ally, the Mizo National Front, holds power.
The elections in these five states, which took place last month, involved over 160 million eligible voters. Due to India’s large population, elections are typically conducted in phases.
“The results in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan indicate that the people of India are firmly with politics of good governance and development, which the @BJP4India stands for,” Modi wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Opposition Leader Acknowledges Defeat
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Congress party, accepted defeat in the three states where his party was unsuccessful.
“The battle of ideology will continue,” Gandhi wrote on X, expressing gratitude to the people of Telangana for their support.
In light of the BJP’s success, Modi celebrated with his supporters, who showered him with flower petals and chanted slogans like “Long live Mother India.” In a speech, Modi hailed the results as “a victory for honesty, transparency, and good governance.”
Modi and his party have maintained their popularity and admiration on a national level throughout their nearly 10-year tenure, with surveys indicating a strong likelihood of winning a third consecutive term in 2024.

Modi’s Popularity and Achievements
Narendra Modi, who took office as Prime Minister of India in 2014, has gained popularity due to his focus on developmental policies, economic reforms, and nationalist rhetoric. His government has launched several initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing digital connectivity throughout the country.
Under Modi’s leadership, India’s economy has experienced significant growth. The government’s efforts to attract foreign investments and promote “Make in India” initiatives have contributed to the country’s rise as a global economic power. In addition, Modi has focused on improving access to education and healthcare, particularly in rural areas.
However, critics of Modi’s government argue that his policies have not been equally beneficial to all sections of society. They claim that there has been a rise in social tensions, particularly targeting religious and ethnic minorities.
Road Ahead
With the upcoming national elections in 2024, all eyes will be on Narendra Modi as he seeks a third term as Prime Minister. The results from the recent state elections indicate a strong support base for Modi and his party, but challenges lie ahead. The opposition parties will likely intensify their efforts to counter Modi’s popularity and policies.
Furthermore, economic challenges such as job creation, inflation control, and managing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will require careful strategies and effective governance. The ability of the government to address these issues will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the upcoming elections.
Regardless of the outcome, India’s democratic process allows for peaceful transfers of power and provides an opportunity for the public to voice their opinions through the ballot box. The upcoming elections will undoubtedly shape the future of India and its position on the global stage.
