Kamala Harris has shattered a record previously held by former Vice President John Calhoun.
On Tuesday, Harris made history by breaking her 32nd Senate tie, surpassing all previous Vice Presidents in the number of tie-breaking votes.
The previous record holder was Vice President John Calhoun, who served under Andrew Jackson. Calhoun, a Democrat from South Carolina who supported slavery, broke 31 ties during his time in office until 1832.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) commended Harris for her historic achievement.
“I join all of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle thanking the vice president for her leadership and making the work of the Senate possible,” Schumer said. “The record Vice President Harris sets today is significant, not just because of the number, but because of what she’s made possible with tiebreaking votes.”
Schumer went on to praise Harris for her tie-breaking vote on The Inflation Reduction Act, which was followed by record price increases.
He later presented her with a golden gavel.
