Prince Harry ordered to pay thousands in legal fees to the publisher of Daily Mail after attempting to dismiss a section of their libel defense.
The order, issued on Monday, will cost Prince Harry $62,800 and must be paid by December 29th.
The Duke of Sussex was suing Associated Newspapers over an article about his efforts for better security in Los Angeles, California, with Meghan Markle.
The article claimed he tried to hide his publicly funded safety efforts in the U.K. after leaving the British Royal Family.
Justice Matthew Nicklin ruled that the publisher has a “real prospect” of proving that messages on Prince Harry’s behalf were “misleading.” He also stated that the article was an “honest opinion” and not defamatory.
“The defendant may well submit that this was a masterclass in the art of ‘spinning,’” Nicklin said.
Prince Harry called the article “fundamentally inaccurate” and accused the newspaper of defaming him by suggesting he lied about his efforts to challenge the government’s decision to remove his security detail.
In 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved to California after resigning as senior royals. They claimed palace staff were indifferent to Meghan’s mental health issues and that she faced racist remarks in the British press.
Since their move, Prince Harry lost his security detail and has faced hostility on social media and from the media, which he says has threatened their safety.
He wants his children to feel safe when overseas and emphasized that he “felt forced” to leave the Royal Family.
“It was with great sadness to both of us that my wife and I felt forced to step back from this role and leave the country in 2020,” Harry said in a statement. “The U.K. is my home. The U.K. is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States. That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on U.K. soil.”
“I can’t put my wife in danger like that, and given my experiences in life, I’m reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm’s way too,” Prince Harry added.
