Jewish Congressman Max Miller faces anti-Semitic encounter with House staffer
Free Palestine: Jewish Congressman Confronted by Anti-Semitic House Staffer
An alarming incident occurred in the halls of the Cannon Office Building when an anti-Semitic House staffer approached Congressman Max Miller, boldly proclaiming “Free Palestine.” For Miller, a staunch supporter of Israel, encounters like these have become all too common.
In an interview with the Washington Free Beacon, Miller recounted the incident, which took place while he was conversing with NBC News’s Ali Vitali outside a coffee shop. “Out of nowhere, this guy beelines up to me visibly shaking—he’s very upset in my presence because he’s a snowflake,” Miller shared. “And he just comes right back up to me and was like, ‘Free Palestine.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ … I’m not going to give him a reaction because that’s what he wants.”
Vitali, who was shocked by the exchange, expressed her astonishment at the blatant anti-Semitism displayed by the staffer. However, she refrained from explicitly labeling it as such in a social media post, instead highlighting how “stunning” it was to witness staff challenging members face-to-face.
Snapshot from the halls of the Hill: a House staffer just passed by GOP Rep. Max Miller —who is Jewish and has been supportive of sending aide to Israel— and said ‘free Palestine.” Pretty rare and stunning to see staff challenge members to their faces this way.

This incident comes at a time when numerous congressional staffers are anonymously protesting, demanding that their bosses support an Israeli ceasefire and reduce their support for the Jewish state.
For instance, on November 8, over 100 congressional staffers walked out of their jobs to advocate for a ceasefire against Hamas. While their identities were concealed by masks, the Free Beacon identified one participant as Yousof Omeish, a staff assistant to Sen. Michael Bennet (D., Colo.). Weeks later, more than 140 congressional interns and fellows anonymously signed an open letter urging Congress to support a ceasefire.
Miller, one of only two Jewish Republicans in Congress, introduced a resolution in January to remove anti-Semitic Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Since then, he has become a leading advocate for providing additional military aid to Israel. Although Miller has not yet identified the staffer who confronted him, he is determined to uncover their identity.
“This will only motivate me to work ten times harder,” Miller declared. “This will only make me prouder to be a Jew. … We will overcome.”
What are the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and how can they be misunderstood or used to promote anti-Semitism?
Ed his support for Miller, stating, “It’s unacceptable for anyone to be treated like this, especially in a place of work.” The incident serves as a sobering reminder that anti-Semitism still exists in various forms, including within the walls of Congress.
Anti-Semitism is not a new phenomenon, and it has a long and dark history. It is the hatred, discrimination, and persecution of Jewish people based on their religious beliefs, ethnicity, or nationality. Throughout history, anti-Semitism has manifested in different ways, leading to violent acts, discrimination, and marginalization of Jewish communities.
However, the struggle against anti-Semitism is not limited to history books. It is an ongoing battle that continues in our society today. Instances like the encounter between Miller and the anti-Semitic House staffer demonstrate that we still have a long way to go in fighting this form of hatred.
This incident also highlights the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While the phrase “Free Palestine” has become a rallying cry for those advocating for the rights of Palestinians, it can also be used as a tool to promote anti-Semitism. It is crucial to recognize that supporting the Palestinian cause does not equate to being anti-Semitic, and criticizing Israeli policies does not mean one is attacking Jewish people or their right to self-determination.
However, it is equally important to distinguish between legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and anti-Semitism. Blurring these lines can reinforce harmful stereotypes and perpetuate discrimination. It is crucial to separate political debates and disagreements from personal attacks based on the religious beliefs or ethnicity of an individual.
As individuals, as a society, and as lawmakers, we must condemn and confront anti-Semitism in all its forms. It is our responsibility to foster an environment of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding within our communities and institutions. This includes educating ourselves about the history and impact of anti-Semitism, promoting dialogue and respectful debate, and standing up against discrimination and hatred when we witness it.
In the case of Congressman Max Miller, he has demonstrated resilience and composure during this incident. By refusing to give the anti-Semitic House staffer the reaction he sought, Miller exemplified the importance of not engaging with hate and instead focusing on dialogue and understanding.
While incidents like these are deeply troubling, they also present an opportunity for growth and change. It is our hope that through open conversations, education, and collective action, we can build a future free from anti-Semitism, discrimination, and hatred. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive and tolerant society where individuals of all backgrounds are respected and valued.
The incident involving Max Miller serves as a reminder that we must remain diligent in combating anti-Semitism wherever it may arise. Only by acknowledging and addressing this form of hatred can we hope to make progress towards a more just and equal world.
