Massachusetts Teachers Union criticized for implying U.S. involvement in Gaza genocide as anti-Semitic
The Massachusetts Teachers Association Faces Backlash for Accusing U.S. of Assisting Israel in Genocide
The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is facing criticism from teachers in the state and Jewish organizations after its board of directors voted in favor of a motion accusing the United States of aiding Israel in committing genocide.
The Newton Teachers Association (NTA), a smaller teachers union in the state, distanced itself from the MTA’s actions, calling them “antisemitic dog-whistling” and warning that it could fuel more hatred towards Jews.
“Some will defend this motion, and deny that to accuse Israel of engaging in a ‘genocidal war on the Palestinian people’ will provoke further antisemitism, or deny that the very use of the word ‘genocide’ to characterize the actions of a people who experienced the Holocaust is callous,”
NTA’s statement said.
The NTA demanded that the MTA retract the motion and criticized it for calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the American government’s “complicity.”
“As an educators’ union, we must take a stand with our union siblings, and promote peace and justice in the region by calling for an end to our government’s complicity with Israel’s genocidal assault on the people of Gaza and intent to take over their territory,”
the MTA statement reads.
The MTA statement also emphasized the need to speak out against the ongoing violence and highlighted the importance of not remaining silent.
Jewish groups in the state, including the Jewish Community Relations Council of greater Boston (JCRC), criticized the MTA for not condemning the Hamas terrorist attack and failing to address the complexities of the situation.
“Any such resolution that does not demand a return of the hostages or call for removal of Hamas as a terrorist organization fails to address the reality of the war and further ensures violence without a path for peace,”
Jeremy Burton, CEO of JCRC, told The Daily Wire.
The NTA also expressed disappointment in the MTA’s failure to mention Hamas and its lack of consideration for the Israeli and Jewish communities affected by the conflict.
Newton, a Boston suburb known for its significant Jewish population, has been particularly affected by the controversy.
Andrea Levin, the executive director of the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA), criticized the MTA’s statement for accusing Israel of genocide and called it “unconscionable.”
“There is no ‘genocide’ underway, but a defensive war by Israel to counter Hamas, which initiated the conflict by invading Israel and slaughtering more than 1000 innocent lives,”
Levin said.
Levin also raised concerns about the potential impact of these views on students, questioning whether educators who support the MTA’s statement would propagate these claims in the classroom.
The MTA has not responded to requests for comment.
How can educators within the MTA and across the state promote fact-based discussions and foster an inclusive and tolerant environment for all students while supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and criticizing certain Israeli policies
Colleagues who are facing a dangerous chorus of voices accusing them of antisemitism, and we must not allow those who engage in hostility towards Jews to define what constitutes support for the Palestinian people,”
the NTA’s statement continued. The MTA’s motion was presented under the guise of solidarity with the Palestinian people during the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, the accusation of genocide has sparked outrage among the Jewish community and many educators in Massachusetts who believe that it is a baseless and inflammatory claim. The United Nations defines genocide as the intentional destruction, in whole or in part, of a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Accusing Israel of committing genocide not only mischaracterizes the situation but also undermines the seriousness of the term and its historical context. The Holocaust, in which six million Jews were systematically murdered, remains one of the most horrific genocides in human history. Comparing Israel’s actions to genocide is not only factually inaccurate but also deeply offensive to the memory of the Holocaust victims. The MTA’s motion also accuses the United States of complicity in the alleged genocide. This accusation places unfair blame on a nation that has been a long-standing ally of Israel, often providing financial and military aid for its security. By making such a claim, the MTA disregards the complexities and nuances of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and oversimplifies a deeply rooted and multifaceted geopolitical issue. The condemnation of the MTA’s motion has been swift. Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee, have criticized the association for spreading false information and perpetuating harmful stereotypes against Jews. Educators within the MTA and across the state have also voiced their concerns about the inflammatory language used in the motion and the potential for increased hostility towards Jewish students. It is essential to recognize that supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and criticizing certain Israeli policies can be done without resorting to accusations of genocide or targeting any specific religious or ethnic group. Engaging in thoughtful dialogue and promoting understanding and empathy should be the approach of any educational institution or association. The Massachusetts Teachers Association has a responsibility to acknowledge the valid concerns and the damage caused by their motion. It is crucial for them to address the accusations of antisemitism and revise their stance on Israel’s actions in a more respectful and accurate manner. As educators, they have a duty to foster an inclusive and tolerant environment for all students and to promote fact-based discussions on complex issues. In the face of the backlash, the MTA should seize this opportunity to educate its members and the wider community on the importance of responsible and accurate discourse. By doing so, they can rebuild trust, demonstrate their commitment to inclusivity, and ensure that they are upholding the values of fairness and integrity that are at the core of their profession.
