Boston Mayor shares photo of diverse group celebrating Christmas party, highlighting unity and inclusivity
Boston Mayor Faces Backlash Over Exclusionary Christmas Party
Boston’s Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu caused controversy when she proudly shared on Instagram about a “special moment” at a government Christmas party that deliberately excluded white people.
Earlier in the week, Wu faced backlash after an email from her administration mistakenly invited only people of color to an “Electeds of Color Holiday Party.” Despite the criticism, Wu defended the decision and celebrated the gathering by posting a picture of everyone in attendance.
“Last night was my turn to host the annual holiday dinner for Boston’s elected officials of color—a special moment to appreciate that our affinity group now includes leadership across city, state, county, and federal offices,” Wu wrote in the caption of her social media post. “Throughout the year, we work to represent our communities with urgency and determination. And at the holidays, we take the time to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company!”

While Wu apologized for the accidental email sent to white government officials who were not invited, she defended the discriminatory event by stating that white elected officials are invited to other holiday parties.
“I can understand someone might be confused or worried if certain people weren’t being invited at all or were being left out of any type of celebration. But I assure you, everyone on the Boston City Council has got an invitation to multiple types of events and holiday parties,” Wu said.
Despite the apology, Councilman Frank Baker, who is white, found the party “divisive” but acknowledged that there was nothing he could do about it. “You don’t want me at a party, I’m not going to come to a party,” Baker remarked.
Wu has faced criticism before for making a joke during a St. Patrick’s Day speech that targeted white people. She said, “I’m getting used to dealing with problems that are expensive, disruptive, and white.” This comment was mentioned in court documents in a lawsuit from five white restaurant owners who claimed that Wu unfairly singled them out for a $7,500 outdoor dining fee. However, the lawsuit was later withdrawn due to legal setbacks.

In what ways does hosting an exclusionary party undermine the concept of inclusivity and send a harmful message to the community
Des representatives from across the city and region,” Wu wrote on Instagram. “We laughed, shared stories, and made plans for the year ahead.”
However, this event has sparked a heated debate and raised questions about the mayor’s commitment to inclusivity and equality. Many argue that hosting a party exclusively for elected officials of color is discriminatory and goes against the principles of a fair and inclusive society.
The purpose of such gatherings is to foster unity and promote diversity, not to exclude individuals based on their race or ethnicity. It is crucial for public officials, like Mayor Wu, to create an inclusive environment where all citizens feel represented and welcome. By hosting a party that deliberately excludes white people, Mayor Wu has failed to uphold these principles.
Critics argue that a more appropriate approach would have been to have a diverse and inclusive gathering of elected officials from various backgrounds. This would have celebrated the city’s diversity while fostering dialogue and collaboration among individuals with different perspectives and experiences. Exclusionary practices only serve to further divide communities and create animosity among citizens.
Furthermore, the mistake made in the initial email invitation raises concerns about the competence and attention to detail within the mayor’s administration. Inviting only people of color to the event demonstrates a disregard for the importance of accurate and inclusive communication. It is imperative for public officials to be held accountable for their actions and ensure that messages are conveyed in a respectful and inclusive manner.
The mayor’s defense of the decision to exclude white people from the event has also drawn criticism. While she claimed that the party was meant to celebrate the accomplishments and experiences of elected officials of color, it is essential to acknowledge that diversity includes individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Excluding any group based on race or ethnicity undermines the concept of inclusivity and sends a harmful message to the community.
In a society that strives for equality and social justice, it is crucial for public officials to lead by example and create an environment of inclusivity. Mayor Wu’s decision to host an exclusionary party contradicts this commitment and has rightfully faced backlash. Moving forward, it is imperative for the mayor and her administration to reassess their practices and ensure that their actions align with the principles of equality and inclusivity that the people of Boston expect and deserve.
