Biden discloses who persuaded him to join Obama: ‘VP role wasn’t my preference

President⁣ Joe Biden’s Reluctance to Join Obama’s ⁢Ticket

In a recent⁣ interview, President Joe Biden revealed the ‍story ⁣behind his initial hesitation to join former President Barack Obama’s Democratic ticket‌ in 2008. Speaking on Conan O’Brien’s SiriusXM podcast, Biden shared that it was his mother ⁤who ultimately convinced him to serve as vice president.

“I called her, ⁢and I said, ‘The president ‌asked me to consider being vice president. I don’t want to do that.’ I said,⁢ ‘Barack, I don’t wanna be vice president.’ Finally, ⁣he said, ‘Well, damn,‍ it’s⁣ only you,'” Biden told O’Brien.

Despite his reservations, Biden followed Obama’s ‌advice to⁢ discuss the opportunity with his family. It was ⁣during this time that Obama became the de facto nominee in August. Biden⁣ recalled, “So I go⁢ home, sit everybody down.‌ Everybody wants‍ me to do it. I didn’t want to do it.”

Biden’s mother played a pivotal role in his decision, reminding him of the historic significance of Obama’s candidacy. She said, “Let me get this straight,⁤ honey. The first black man has‍ a ‍chance to be president, he says he needs you, and you ⁢told him‌ no?”

Biden ultimately joined ⁤the Democratic ticket, making history by⁢ electing Obama‌ as America’s first black president.⁣ He served‍ as ⁣Obama’s vice president from 2009 to⁢ 2017 before⁤ being elected as the nation’s highest office in 2020.

Obama’s Endorsement and Support

In 2020, Obama endorsed ⁢Biden for president and has actively supported⁢ his 2024 campaign. ‌Obama expressed ⁤his confidence in Biden’s ability ⁣to deliver ⁣for the American people, ⁢stating, “He’s delivered ⁤for the American people ⁤— and he’ll continue to do so once he’s re-elected. Let’s get to work!”
