California Governor Gavin Newsom Criticizes Colorado Supreme Court Ruling on Trump’s Removal from Primary Ballot
In an unexpected move, California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his criticism of the recent Colorado Supreme Court ruling that removed former President Donald Trump from the primary ballot. Governor Newsom, a Democrat, stated that in California, they believe in defeating candidates at the polls and emphasized that Donald Trump poses a threat to their liberties and democracy. He dismissed any other approach as a mere political distraction.
“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said. “But in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”
This statement came as a surprise, as it is rare to find Democrats who still support democracy, especially when it involves defending a Republican candidate like Donald Trump. Newsom’s comments followed Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis’ call for California’s Secretary of State to explore legal options to remove Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.
The Colorado ruling has sparked discussions in other states, with some considering removing Trump from their ballots as well. The movement gained momentum in California after Lt. Gov. Kounalakis urged Secretary of State Shirley Weber to take similar action.
“I urge you to explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot,” Kounalakis wrote in her letter to Secretary Weber.
It is important to note that the Supreme Court is currently reviewing the order against Trump, and a final decision is pending. The outcome of this review will have significant implications for Trump’s eligibility to appear on the primary ballots of various states.
In a political landscape that is increasingly polarized, Governor Newsom’s criticism of the Colorado Supreme Court ruling stands out. It highlights the divide between those who see Trump as a threat and those who believe in the democratic process of defeating candidates at the polls.
