Gov. Jared Polis Faces Backlash for Christmas Eve Performance
Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) is facing criticism after his Christmas Eve message, where he delighted his state with an a cappella rendition of “Feliz Navidad.” The video, posted on his Spanish X account, has already garnered over 2 million views.
Polis, 48, showcased his singing talent by performing Jose Feliciano’s 1970 classic without any background music. He even added a little dance and a caption that said, ¡Feliz Navidad Colorado!
While some appreciated the governor’s performance, many accused Polis of pandering to the Latin community and ignoring the plight of thousands of immigrants seeking shelter in the state.
“Even the Latinxs are cringing,” one user commented.
“I didn’t need a reminder of why I left that state, but it’s still nice to know I did the right thing,” another person remarked.
“It’s cultural appropriation to pander in this manner,” stated one critical comment.
“Are you talking to all the illegals that just got bussed here? Try [Mandarin] or [Swahili],” questioned a user.
Colorado has not been immune to the illegal immigrant crisis that has plagued the United States under blue-state governors and President Joe Biden. Last week, over 340 immigrants arrived in Denver via bus, pushing local shelters to their limits. Currently, more than 3,800 illegal immigrants are residing in Denver shelters, according to a report.
“We can run out of room. We can run out of resources. We are already limited as it is. It strains an already strained system even further,” warned Jon Ewing, a Denver Human Services spokesman.
