Republican New York Representative Brandon Williams’ residence was targeted in a dangerous prank known as “swatting” on Christmas day, resulting in a false emergency call that brought several police officers to his home.
On Monday, Williams (R-N.Y.) revealed that he had been informed by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office before they arrived at his upstate New York home, providing him with some relief amidst the false emergency.
“Our home was swatted this afternoon,” he announced on X, formerly Twitter. “Thanks to the Deputies and Troopers who contacted me before arriving. They left with homemade cookies and spiced nuts! Merry Christmas everyone!”
Williams, who represents the cities of Syracuse and Utica in his House district, also mentioned that the United States Capitol Police and local officers were investigating the false emergency call that led to five police cars being dispatched to his home.
“The deputies & troopers were polite, professional, & prompt. God bless them,” Williams added.
“Swatting” is a dangerous prank where false police reports, often involving violence, are made to trick law enforcement into sending a heavily armed SWAT team to an unsuspecting victim’s location.
In recent years, “swatting” has become a disturbing form of online harassment, particularly targeting celebrities and live streamers. This prank puts the victims at risk as police respond to what they believe to be a genuine threat.
The motive behind the false emergency call at Williams’ home remains unknown.
Williams is now the second member of Congress to fall victim to a “swatting” incident on Christmas day. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) also announced that her residence was targeted with a false emergency call.
Law enforcement officers were dispatched to Greene’s home after a misleading call was made to a suicide hotline, falsely claiming that someone had shot their girlfriend and was threatening to commit suicide.
Greene revealed on X that this was the eighth time she had been a victim of “swatting.”
In an effort to combat the dangerous practice of “swatting,” the FBI launched a nationwide database for such incidents in June.

What are the potential consequences and penalties for individuals involved in “swatting” incidents?
Lawmakers and law enforcement agencies have been working to increase awareness and strengthen penalties for those involved in the act. The increasing frequency of “swatting” incidents has raised concerns about the safety of individuals and the misuse of emergency resources.
While the motive behind targeting Representative Brandon Williams’ home remains unknown, the incident serves as a reminder of the seriousness of this activity. “Swatting” not only puts the victims at risk but also diverts valuable resources away from genuine emergencies. The false emergency call not only led to a wasteful deployment of five police cars to Williams’ home but also caused unnecessary stress and anxiety for him and his family.
Fortunately, Williams was informed by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office before they arrived, providing him with some relief amidst the chaos. He expressed his gratitude to the deputies and troopers who handled the situation professionally and with care. Williams’ positive outlook and appreciation for law enforcement during this difficult time highlight the importance of recognizing their dedication and hard work.
It is essential to acknowledge that Williams is not the only member of Congress who fell victim to a “swatting” incident on Christmas day. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also experienced a false emergency call at her residence. This alarming pattern emphasizes the need for continued efforts to address the issue effectively.
Law enforcement agencies must continue to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in “swatting” incidents, holding them accountable for their actions. Additionally, legislation could be considered to establish stricter penalties for those found guilty of perpetrating this dangerous prank. Increased awareness and education about the consequences of ”swatting” may also deter potential offenders.
Overall, ”swatting” is a serious concern that needs to be addressed at both the individual and societal levels. It requires the collaboration of lawmakers, law enforcement agencies, and the public to combat this harmful practice. By implementing stringent measures and raising awareness, we can work towards preventing “swatting” incidents and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.
