Grand Canyon University faces legal trouble from Biden administration
The Biden Administration Files Lawsuit Against Grand Canyon University for Misleading Students
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) under the Biden administration has taken legal action against Grand Canyon University, the largest Christian university in the nation. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, accuses the university of deceptive advertising practices and misrepresenting the costs of its doctoral programs.
“Grand Canyon deceived students by holding itself out as a non-profit institution and misrepresenting the costs and number of courses required to earn doctoral degrees,” said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
The government alleges that the university failed to disclose the true costs of its “continuation courses,” which significantly add to the publicly disclosed cost of the degree. This lawsuit marks the second legal action taken by the Biden administration against Grand Canyon University regarding its doctoral programs.
Grand Canyon University, which transitioned to a for-profit status in the late 2000s, has been seeking to regain its nonprofit status. While the Internal Revenue Service granted the school nonprofit status, the Department of Education has yet to approve it. The university has sued the department in an effort to compel recognition of the change.
The university claims that the ongoing legal battles with the Biden administration are part of a deliberate targeting campaign. In response to the FTC lawsuit, the university accused the Biden administration of “weaponizing federal government agencies” to target institutions they oppose ideologically.
“Given the major problems that exist in higher education related to high tuition costs, significant student debt, poor student loan default rates, long completion times, etc., it is baffling that the federal government has chosen to target a Christian university that is addressing those issues in very positive ways,” the university stated.
Despite the pending fine and litigation costs, Grand Canyon University recently announced that it will not raise tuition for the 16th consecutive year. The annual tuition for the upcoming school year is set at $16,500.

In what ways did Grand Canyon University allegedly misrepresent the costs and requirements of its doctoral degree programs?
F the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTC. “These actions not only harm students financially but also undermine the integrity of the higher education system.”
According to the lawsuit, Grand Canyon University advertised itself as a non-profit institution, implying that its primary focus was on education rather than making a profit. However, the FTC alleges that the university was operating as a for-profit institution, thus misleading students who believed they were attending a non-profit university.
The lawsuit also accuses the university of misrepresenting the costs and number of courses required to earn doctoral degrees. Grand Canyon University allegedly provided incomplete and misleading information to prospective students, leading them to believe that the programs were more affordable and required fewer courses than they actually did. As a result, many students ended up taking on significant financial burdens and investing more time and effort than they initially anticipated.
This legal action by the Biden administration is part of a larger effort to crack down on deceptive practices in the higher education sector. The president has consistently emphasized the importance of providing affordable and quality education to all Americans, and holding institutions accountable for their actions is a critical step in achieving that goal.
Grand Canyon University, founded in 1949, has grown to become a significant player in the Christian higher education field. With tens of thousands of students enrolled in its online and on-campus programs, the university has built a reputation for itself as a provider of quality education with a strong emphasis on Christian values.
The allegations made in the lawsuit against Grand Canyon University raise serious concerns about the integrity and transparency of the institution. Students who trusted the university to provide them with an affordable and meaningful education were allegedly deceived, resulting in significant financial and emotional hardship.
The Biden administration’s decision to take legal action sends a clear message to universities and other higher education institutions: deceptive practices will not be tolerated. Protecting students from misleading advertising and ensuring they have accurate information about the costs and requirements of their education is crucial.
As the lawsuit proceeds, it is essential that Grand Canyon University cooperates fully with the FTC and commits to rectifying any deceptive practices. The university must take responsibility for its actions and prioritize the well-being of its students.
In conclusion, the Biden administration’s lawsuit against Grand Canyon University highlights the importance of transparency and integrity in the higher education sector. Deceptive practices not only harm students financially but also erode trust in the education system as a whole. It is crucial that universities are held accountable for their actions and that students have access to accurate and truthful information when making decisions about their education. The outcome of this lawsuit will set an important precedent for the future and will hopefully contribute to a more transparent and ethical higher education landscape.
