Newly-elected Argentine President Javier Milei was seen flying commercial as part of his move to rescue Argentina from its worst economic crisis in history.
On Saturday, the Libertarian president was captured on videos circulating on social media boarding a commercial flight and enthusiastically exclaiming “Long Live Liberty!”
The move aims to curb government spending in Argentina, as the country is projected to face a staggering 200% inflation rate in the coming year.
The airline company Milei chose for his flight, Aerolineas Argentinas, was re-nationalized in 2008, and since then the government has lost $8 billion of its funds. For years, Aerolineas Argentinas has been in dire financial straits.
Milei believes that Argentina can combat inflation and economic decline by shutting down inefficient state-run businesses.
The nation currently grapples with a 140% inflation rate and a 5% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth deficit.
A decade ago, only 5% of the Argentine population lived in poverty, but today that number has skyrocketed to 40%.
Earlier this month, Milei slashed car purchases for government officials by 50% and announced a reduction in government drivers and vehicles.
He has made it clear that he is determined to take every possible measure to tackle the economic crisis.
“One of our main goals as a Government is to eliminate privileges. The adjustments we plan to make in political expenses, specifically in operating expenses, will save us around US$ 3 billion per year,” Milei stated. “Talking about 15,000% inflation is terrifying for everyone, and that’s what we’re working to address. It’s important to understand that current inflation is running at approximately 3,678% per year; this 1% daily inflation rate plunges us into hyperinflation, which we are striving to prevent from happening.”
Since taking office on December 10th, Milei has warned Argentinian citizens to brace themselves for significant cuts in public spending as part of emergency measures to revive the nation’s struggling economy.

What are some potential concerns raised by critics regarding Milei’s focus on dismantling state-run businesses and implementing market-friendly policies

While Milei’s actions have drawn both praise and criticism, many Argentinians are hopeful that his bold and unconventional approach will help steer the country towards economic stability.
Some critics argue that flying commercial is merely a symbolic gesture and that real change can only come through comprehensive economic reforms. They point out that reducing government spending alone may not be enough to address the deep-rooted structural issues plaguing the economy.
However, Milei’s supporters see his decision to fly commercial as a symbolic rejection of the lavish lifestyle often associated with political power. They believe that his commitment to eliminating privileges and reducing waste in government spending is a step in the right direction.
Argentina has been grappling with economic challenges for years, including high inflation, a shrinking GDP, and rising poverty rates. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated these issues, pushing the country into its worst economic crisis in history.
Milei’s focus on dismantling state-run businesses and implementing market-friendly policies aligns with his libertarian ideology. He believes that allowing free-market forces to operate without government intervention will promote competition, innovation, and economic growth.
However, critics argue that his approach may further exacerbate income inequality and widen the gap between the rich and the poor. They say that deregulation and privatization could lead to job losses and reduced access to essential services for vulnerable populations.
As Milei works towards implementing his economic agenda, the eyes of the world are on Argentina. The success or failure of his policies could have far-reaching implications beyond the country’s borders.
For now, many Argentinians are cautiously optimistic, hoping that their new president’s unorthodox methods will bring about the change they so desperately need. Milei’s willingness to fly commercial and take bold steps to rein in government spending signals a departure from the status quo and a determination to tackle the economic crisis head-on.
Only time will tell whether Milei’s unconventional approach will yield positive results and transform Argentina’s economic landscape. In the meantime, the nation waits with bated breath, hopeful for a brighter future.
