House GOP seeks to hold Hunter Biden in contempt for defying subpoenas
House Republicans to Hold Hunter Biden in Contempt of Congress
House Republicans announced on Friday their intention to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress next week. This comes after he refused to participate in a closed-door interview with Republicans as part of their investigation into the Biden family.
Investigation and Contempt Proceedings
Chairman James Comer (R-KY) of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, along with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) of the House Judiciary Committee, will hold markup meetings to consider a resolution to hold Hunter in contempt. Last month, Hunter skipped a deposition with congressional investigators, stating his preference to answer questions publicly.
Comer and Jordan expressed their frustration, stating, “Our investigation has produced significant evidence suggesting President Biden knew of, participated in, and benefitted from his family cashing in on the Biden name. We planned to question Hunter Biden about this record of evidence, but he blatantly defied two lawful subpoenas, choosing to read a prepared statement outside of the Capitol instead of appearing for testimony as required.”
The meeting to discuss the contempt proceedings will take place on January 10 at 10:00 a.m. EST at the Rayburn House Office Building. Comer and Jordan emphasized that Hunter Biden’s refusal to comply with the subpoenas constitutes contempt of Congress and should be referred to the appropriate United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Hunter Biden’s Challenge
On the day Hunter was supposed to appear for an interview, he arrived at the U.S. Capitol Building and challenged Comer to allow him to testify in a public hearing, answering “legitimate” questions. “What are they afraid of? I’m here. I’m ready,” he confidently told reporters.
Although Biden’s lawyer had previously offered this option multiple times, Comer insisted on a deposition. However, he did express openness to having Biden testify in a public hearing after the closed-door interview.

Response from Ranking Member
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking member on the Oversight Committee, criticized Comer’s announcement. He argued that there is no precedent for holding a private citizen in contempt of Congress when they have offered to testify publicly, under oath, and on a day chosen by the Committee.
Additional Investigation
Comer and Jordan are also investigating whether President Joe Biden obstructed their investigation by encouraging Hunter not to comply with their requests for a deposition.
What evidence has the investigation into the Biden family’s alleged corruption revealed so far?

The decision to hold Hunter Biden in contempt marks a significant escalation in the ongoing investigation into the Biden family’s alleged corruption. Republicans have been seeking answers about Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China, particularly his position on the board of Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings.
Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma has been a subject of controversy due to allegations of political favoritism and potential conflicts of interest. Republicans have argued that his position was secured through his father’s influence as vice president at the time, while Democrats have dismissed these claims as politically motivated.
The decision to hold Hunter Biden in contempt also highlights the ongoing partisan divisions within Congress. Republicans have accused Democrats of attempting to shield Hunter Biden from scrutiny, while Democrats argue that the investigation is a politically motivated witch hunt.
It is unclear what the consequences of holding Hunter Biden in contempt will be, as such proceedings have rarely been used in recent years. The resolution will need to be approved by the full House for it to have any significant impact. Democrats, who hold the majority in the House, are unlikely to support the resolution, further exacerbating the partisan divide.
The contempt proceedings against Hunter Biden are likely to draw intense media attention and further fuel the political divisions within the country. As the investigation continues, both sides will continue to argue their case, with the ultimate resolution likely to be determined by the outcome of the next election.
In the midst of these proceedings, it is important to remember the importance of transparency and accountability in our democratic system. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, it is crucial that the truth is uncovered and that any wrongdoing is addressed. The American people deserve answers and confidence in the integrity of their elected officials.
As the investigation into the Biden family continues, it is paramount that Congress upholds its responsibility to conduct impartial and fair investigations. The contempt proceedings against Hunter Biden mark just one development in an increasingly complex and contentious political landscape. Only time will tell how this will impact the upcoming elections and the future of American politics.
