Principal commends students for protesting Israel on Kristallnacht
A Maryland High School Principal Supports Anti-Israel Walkout on Kristallnacht Anniversary
In a shocking turn of events, Principal Edward Owusu of Clarksburg High School in Montgomery County, Maryland, not only approved but also expressed pride in a student-led anti-Israel walkout on the anniversary of Kristallnacht. The walkout was organized by the Palestinian Youth Movement, a radical group known for its support of terrorism.
According to emails obtained by The Daily Wire, Principal Owusu granted excused absences to participating students, provided equipment to support the protest, and even overrode a Jewish teacher who correctly marked absent students. The emails reveal that the Muslim Student Association (MSA) at Clarksburg High School reached out to Owusu, expressing their support for the walkout and requesting his approval.
A Call for Action
The MSA student leader wrote, “The national Palestinian Youth Movement has organized ‘Shut it Down for Palestine’ on Thursday, November 9th. This event calls for all students to walk out of school, employees to walk out from work, and to protest the Israeli and US government. Clarksburg’s MSA is in unequivocal support for a ceasefire and would like to walk out this Thursday.”
Principal Owusu wasted no time in responding, expressing his pride in the MSA’s decision and instructing them to meet with Mr. Haynes to discuss the walkout plans. However, it is important to note that November 9th is the anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of anti-Jewish violence that marked the beginning of the Holocaust. The timing of the walkout, organized by a group known for supporting terrorism, raises serious concerns.
The Palestinian Youth Movement has a history of radical activities, including holding rallies glorifying terrorists and advocating for the release of individuals convicted of supporting terrorist organizations. Their rejection of peace deals that do not align with their extremist views further underscores their dangerous ideology.
Support from School Administration
Assistant Principal David Douglass enthusiastically approved the protest, offering not only permission but also providing a microphone and speaker system to support the demonstration.
The students submitted their signs and speeches for approval, some of which contained concerning messages such as “By any means necessary” and “Resistance until liberation.” One speech even referred to the establishment of Israel as a “catastrophe” and expressed a desire to reclaim all of Palestine “from the river to the sea.”
While Principal Owusu later claimed that hate speech or offensive slogans would not be tolerated, the emails do not include any rejection of the signs or speeches. This lack of accountability raises further questions about the school’s handling of the situation.
Outrage and Concern
Jewish parents expressed outrage upon discovering the school’s support for the protest. One parent pointed out the double standard, stating that if a similar event targeted other groups, it would not be tolerated.
Principal Owusu attempted to address the concerns by assuring Jewish parents that he was consulting with the school’s Jewish Culture Club sponsor. However, it became evident that he had overridden her when she questioned the excused absences and the verification process for student participation.
Despite the controversy surrounding the walkout, Principal Owusu retired on unrelated personal grounds, leaving many unanswered questions. The Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
It is disheartening to see the politicization of education and the promotion of extremist ideologies within our schools. The incident at Clarksburg High School serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fostering an inclusive and unbiased learning environment.

What measures should be implemented to ensure a balanced and inclusive environment in the school, fostering respect, understanding, and critical thinking rather than biased agendas or support for violent ideologies
Ches for approval by the school administration, ensuring that their message would be aligned with their anti-Israel agenda. This level of support from the school administration is deeply troubling, as it sends a message that promoting extremist views and supporting terrorism is acceptable within the school community.
It is important to recognize the significance of Kristallnacht, a horrific event in history that should be solemnly remembered and respected. The decision to hold an anti-Israel walkout on this particular day not only disrespects the memory of the victims of the Holocaust but also perpetuates a dangerous narrative that seeks to delegitimize the state of Israel.
Principal Owusu’s actions, particularly in overriding the attendance records of absent students marked by a Jewish teacher, are both concerning and discriminatory. By prioritizing the voices of the anti-Israel movement over a respectful acknowledgment of Jewish history and heritage, Principal Owusu is failing in his duty to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Furthermore, the Muslim Student Association’s support for this walkout raises questions about the values being promoted within the organization. While it is important to uphold the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest, it is equally important to acknowledge the responsibility that comes with those rights. By aligning themselves with a group known for its support of terrorism and its rejection of peaceful resolutions, the MSA is sending a troubling message to its members and the wider school community.
As members of the community, parents, and concerned citizens, it is crucial that we challenge and condemn such actions. We must hold our educational institutions to a higher standard, ensuring that they provide a balanced and inclusive environment that fosters respect, understanding, and critical thinking. The education of our youth should not be tainted by biased agendas or support for violent ideologies.
It is our duty to call on Principal Owusu, the school administration, and the school board to reassess their actions and policies. Respect for Jewish history and support for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should be upheld, rather than promoting extremist views and supporting groups known for their ties to terrorism.
The students involved in this walkout should be encouraged to engage in open and respectful dialogue about the complex issues surrounding Israel and Palestine. It is through education, understanding, and empathy that we can truly work towards a more peaceful and inclusive future for all.
