Washington SOS certifies police pursuit initiative to Legislature
The Washington Secretary of State’s Office Certifies Initiative 2113 for November Ballot
The Washington Secretary of State’s Office has officially certified Initiative 2113, which focuses on police vehicular pursuits, to be included on the November ballot if the Legislature fails to pass it.
The initiative aims to loosen the restrictions placed on law enforcement officers when pursuing suspects since 2021. Although the Legislature has made some changes to state law, supporters of the initiative want to revert to the pre-2021 regulations, allowing officers to pursue suspects if there is reasonable suspicion of a law violation and a threat to public safety.
The certification process involved a random sampling of 13,038 signatures, with 10,579 deemed valid and 2,447 invalid. The Secretary of State’s Office estimated that even with a maximum of 84,039 possible invalid signatures, there would still be enough valid signatures to qualify the initiative for the ballot.
Last month, Let’s Go Washington submitted a total of 434,594 signatures for the initiative. This voter advocacy group has also submitted signatures for five other initiatives:
- Repealing Washington’s cap-and-trade program
- Granting parents and guardians the right to review educational materials, receive notifications, and withdraw from certain sexual health education programs
- Allowing certain individuals to opt out of the state’s mandatory long-term care tax
- Repealing the capital gains tax
- Prohibiting income taxes at the city and county level
What are the arguments presented by supporters of Initiative 2113 for loosening these restrictions?
