Hunter Biden to participate in deposition on Capitol Hill
President Biden’s Son Agrees to Deposition Before House Lawmakers
President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, has agreed to a sit-down deposition before House lawmakers, accompanied by an eight-page attorney letter to Capitol Hill on Friday.
Just two days after the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee voted to advance contempt resolutions against Hunter Biden, his attorney stated that he would be available for a closed-door interview.
“If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition,” wrote Attorney Abbe David Lowell. ”We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Biden’s behalf.”
The letter was submitted after Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance on Capitol Hill to capture footage for an upcoming Netflix documentary while lawmakers debated whether to hold him in contempt.

Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to additional tax charges filed by Special Counsel David Weiss in California the next day. Months after a federal judge in Delaware derailed a sweetheart plea agreement, Weiss charged Hunter Biden with nine new tax crimes but withheld charges related to foreign influence-peddling involving his father in the White House.
Lowell spent eight pages in the Friday letter to lawmakers arguing that the subpoena issued by House Republicans in November was invalid because it focused on impeachment. House Republicans did not formally authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden until mid-December.
For months, Lowell refused lawmakers’ request for Hunter Biden to sit for a closed-door deposition before a public hearing.
“If, as you claim, your efforts are important and involve issues that Americans should know about, then let the light shine on these proceedings,” Lowell wrote in December.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer of Kentucky and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio responded to Lowell’s demands that Hunter Biden be given special treatment with a public hearing and nothing else.
“Mr. Biden’s attempt to avoid sitting for a deposition pursuant to the terms of subpoenas — by offering instead to testify at a public hearing — amounts to a demand that he receive special treatment from the Committees,” Comer and Jordan said. “Mr. Biden will not succeed in attempting to dictate to the Committees how they conduct their investigation.”
On Wednesday, contempt resolutions were sent to the entire chamber.
“Hunter Biden’s willful refusal to comply with the Committees’ subpoenas is a criminal act. It constitutes contempt of Congress and warrants referral to the appropriate United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution as prescribed by law,” stated Comer. “We will not provide Hunter Biden with special treatment because of his last name.”
Financial records released by the Oversight Committee last month revealed Hunter Biden funneling money directly to Joe Biden as the family engaged in political influence with overseas businessmen. According to investigators, the Biden family directed money through more than 20 shell companies, most of which were established while Joe Biden was vice president. The Biden family was found to have received over $20 million from foreign oligarchs in countries like China, Russia, and Kazakhstan.

Why did Hunter Biden’s attorney emphasize the need for a new subpoena and address the validity of previous subpoenas?
President Biden’s Son Agrees to Deposition Before House Lawmakers
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has agreed to participate in a sit-down deposition before House lawmakers. This decision was accompanied by an eight-page attorney letter sent to Capitol Hill on Friday. The announcement came just two days after the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee voted to advance contempt resolutions against Hunter Biden. His attorney, Abbe David Lowell, stated that he would be available for a closed-door interview if a proper subpoena was issued.
The attorney’s letter emphasized the need for a new subpoena now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry. It stated that Mr. Biden would comply with a subpoena for a hearing or deposition and would accept such a subpoena on his behalf. The letter was submitted after Hunter Biden made a surprise appearance on Capitol Hill to capture footage for an upcoming Netflix documentary while lawmakers debated whether to hold him in contempt.
It is worth noting that Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to additional tax charges filed by Special Counsel David Weiss in California the next day. Weiss charged Hunter Biden with nine new tax crimes, but the charges related to foreign influence-peddling involving his father in the White House were not included. This follows a previous instance where a federal judge in Delaware derailed a plea agreement for Hunter Biden.
In the letter sent to lawmakers, Lowell argued that the subpoena issued by House Republicans in November was invalid because it focused on impeachment. House Republicans did not formally authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden until mid-December. For months, Lowell had refused lawmakers’ requests for Hunter Biden to sit for a closed-door deposition before a public hearing.
Lowell emphasized the need for transparency in these proceedings. He suggested that if the lawmakers believed their efforts were important and involved issues that the American public should know about, then the proceedings should be conducted in the light of public scrutiny. However, House Oversight Chairman James Comer of Kentucky and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio responded to Lowell’s demands by insisting on a public hearing and nothing else, rejecting any special treatment for Hunter Biden.
Contempt resolutions were sent to the entire chamber on Wednesday. Comer stated that Hunter Biden’s refusal to comply with the Committees’ subpoenas constituted contempt of Congress and should be referred to the appropriate United States Attorney’s Office for prosecution. The lawmakers emphasized that they would not provide Hunter Biden with special treatment due to his last name.
In summary, Hunter Biden has agreed to a deposition before House lawmakers, following the advancement of contempt resolutions against him. The attorney letter accompanying this decision highlights the need for a proper subpoena and addresses concerns about the validity of previous subpoenas. It remains to be seen how this deposition will unfold and if any further legal actions will be taken.
