DC Educators for Social Justice to hold curriculum fair before BLM ‘Week of Action
DC Area Educators for Social Justice Hosts Curriculum Fair to Promote Black Lives Matter Principles
DC Area Educators for Social Justice (DCAESJ), a network of passionate teachers and school administrators, is gearing up to host an exciting curriculum fair next week. The aim of this event is to encourage public schools to embrace the national demands rooted in the guiding principles of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The curriculum fair is a prelude to the highly anticipated Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, which DCAESJ actively helps organize in D.C. Public Schools. This empowering week is scheduled to take place from February 5 to 9.
Engaging Topics and Inspiring Sessions
The curriculum fair, set to take place on January 20, will feature a range of thought-provoking topics. Attendees can expect sessions on “queer affirming,” “trans affirming,” “restorative justice,” “anti-racist professional development,” and even “reproductive justice,” a term often associated with abortion activism.
One particularly intriguing session, titled “From Inspiration to Action: Making a Plan for Monday,” appears to provide teachers and administrators with a blueprint for implementing critical race theory ideology in their classrooms. This session aims to empower educators to collaborate and organize the “Week of Action” at their respective schools. It is recommended for school officials working with early elementary to upper elementary students.
Additionally, the curriculum fair will feature an enlightening talk by an “Afrofuturist” who will explore the concept of reclaiming identity through the examination of spacetime, power, and bodily identity. The event’s keynote speaker, Enid Lee, is an esteemed “anti-racist professional development specialist.”
Controversy and Support
While DCPS has previously celebrated the Black Lives Matter “Week of Action,” this year’s event has been marked by controversy. Black Lives Matter at School openly expressed support for Hamas following the terrorist attack on Israeli citizens on October 7. The group attributed the attack to Israeli settler colonialism, land dispossession, occupation, blockade, apartheid, and attempted genocide of Palestinians.
Nicole Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, finds the group’s support for Hamas appalling. She questions the decision to continue the Week of Action in public school districts across America in light of this support.
Black Lives Matter at School’s program includes a “year of purpose” that encourages educators to reflect on their own work in relation to antiracist pedagogy and abolitionist practice. The goal is to consistently prioritize and center Black lives in classrooms.
DCPS has not yet responded to requests for comment.
How can teaching for Black lives principles be integrated into curriculum to empower students and foster critical thinking about social justice issues
He importance of Black history in schools,” “addressing systemic racism,” and “teaching for Black lives.” These sessions aim to provide educators with the resources and knowledge they need to effectively incorporate social justice and Black Lives Matter principles into their curriculum.
Notable speakers and experts in the field of education and social justice will lead the sessions at the fair. They will share their insights and experiences, offering practical strategies and tips to create a more inclusive and culturally aware classroom environment. Educators from both public and private schools are encouraged to attend, as the fair is open to all.
Building a Supportive Network
The curriculum fair also presents an opportunity for educators to connect and collaborate with like-minded professionals. Participants will have the chance to join group discussions, exchange ideas, and learn from the successes and challenges of their peers. This networking aspect of the fair is highly valued by educators, as it allows for the sharing of best practices and the building of a supportive community committed to social justice in education.
In addition to the sessions and networking, the curriculum fair will also feature information booths where attendees can learn about resources, materials, and organizations that support the integration of Black Lives Matter principles into educational settings. Exhibitors will include publishers, educational organizations, and community groups dedicated to promoting diversity and equity in schools.
Advancing Equity and Inclusion
The curriculum fair and the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action are part of a larger movement to create more equitable and inclusive education systems. This movement recognizes the need to address racial disparities and biases in our schools and aims to empower students and educators to challenge systemic racism.
By integrating Black Lives Matter principles into the curriculum, educators hope to create a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of history, while also fostering empathy, understanding, and critical thinking. The goal is to empower students to become active agents of change and to contribute to a more just and equitable society.
Creating Lasting Change
DC Area Educators for Social Justice understand that transformative change does not happen overnight. However, they are dedicated to making a lasting impact in the education system. By hosting events like the curriculum fair and supporting initiatives like the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, they are taking important steps towards creating a more equitable and inclusive educational experience for all students.
Through advocacy, collaboration, and the sharing of best practices, educators are becoming agents of change in their schools and communities. By promoting Black Lives Matter principles, they are not only teaching about social justice but also actively working to create a more just and inclusive society.
DC Area Educators for Social Justice invites all educators and stakeholders in the education system to attend the curriculum fair and join in the mission to promote equitable and inclusive education.
