World Economic Forum invites Iran’s Foreign Minister to exclusive gathering
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian: A Member of the IRGC Terror Group
The World Economic Forum, renowned for its exclusive gatherings of influential business leaders, has caused controversy by inviting Iran’s foreign minister to participate in its prestigious event this week. Calls have been made for Switzerland, the host country, to deny a visa to Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who is not only Iran’s foreign minister but also an active member of the U.S.-sanctioned terror group, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The conference, which began on Monday, will continue throughout the week.
United Against a Nuclear Iran (UANI), an international advocacy group opposing the hardline regime, has recently petitioned the Swiss government to reject Amir-Abdollahian’s visa application. They highlight his affiliation with the IRGC and the regime’s brutal treatment of the Iranian people, including beatings, torture, rape, and mass executions. UANI has also sent a similar letter to the leaders of the World Economic Forum, urging them to rescind the invitation.
Despite these concerns, Amir-Abdollahian is scheduled to deliver a speech at the forum, leading critics to accuse the organization of providing a platform to one of the world’s leading sponsors of terrorism and a key supporter of the Hamas terror group’s attack on Israel last year. UANI argues that by inviting Iran’s top diplomat to mingle with the global elite, the World Economic Forum is legitimizing Iran’s regime, even as its terror proxies wreak havoc in the Middle East.
“We urge you to deny him a visa,” wrote UANI in their letter to the Swiss government. “Switzerland and the World Economic Forum would not dream of inviting Hamas leadership to travel to Davos. By the same token, they should similarly deny a visa and invitation to its major Iranian sponsor, which finances the Gaza-based group by as much as $350 million annually.”
Despite UANI’s efforts, the Swiss government has not responded to their petition, and it appears that Amir-Abdollahian has been granted entry into the country to attend the event. The World Economic Forum has yet to comment on their decision to host the diplomat.
Jason Brodsky, UANI’s policy director, expressed his disappointment, stating, ”Apparently cheerleading, arming, funding, and resourcing the largest massacre against the Jewish people since the Holocaust on October 7 and threatening vital global maritime chokepoints will earn Iran’s foreign minister an invitation to speak at the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos this week. Sadly there appear to be no WEF standards. Did WEF leaders invite Hamas? Of course not. Why would they invite Iran’s foreign minister, who represents Hamas’ sponsor?”
UANI also criticized the corporate sponsors of the World Economic Forum, accusing them of endorsing a meeting that provides a platform for Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. They consider this action irresponsible and scandalous.
In addition to his role in violently suppressing anti-regime protests in Iran, Amir-Abdollahian is an active member of the IRGC.
“To allow Abdollahian into Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum would be a slap in the face to the brave Iranian people who have been fighting for an end to the totalitarian Islamic Republic in the name of ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ since at least September 2022, following the murder of Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iranian security authorities,” wrote UANI. “Abdollahian has repeatedly lied to the world about the crimes against humanity the regime has committed against its people.”
Last year, the World Economic Forum chose not to host any Iranian leaders in response to the violent suppression of protests in the country. However, since then, the hardline regime has continued to oppress its citizens and support terrorism in the Middle East, including providing resources to Hamas for its ongoing conflict with Israel.
“By inviting Abdollahian, Bern and the World Economic Forum are signaling that it is now back to a ‘business as usual’ paradigm with Iran,” UANI stated. “To the contrary, the world should be isolating the regime rather than emboldening and legitimizing it.”
What message does the decision to allow Amir-Abdollahian to speak at the forum send about the international community’s stance on state-sponsored terrorism and human rights abuses
We are deeply disappointed that the World Economic Forum has chosen to give a platform to a member of the IRGC, a known terrorist organization. It is inexcusable to ignore the regime’s egregious human rights abuses and its support for terrorist activities. By inviting Amir-Abdollahian and giving him the opportunity to speak, the World Economic Forum is sending a message that it is willing to overlook these atrocities for the sake of business and diplomacy.”
The IRGC, which was established shortly after the 1979 Iranian Revolution, is the regime’s primary instrument for suppressing internal dissent and exporting its revolutionary ideals. It has been involved in numerous terrorist activities throughout the Middle East, including providing support to militant groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.
In addition to its role in terrorism, the IRGC is responsible for cracking down on domestic opposition to the regime. Under the guise of maintaining national security, the IRGC has brutally suppressed protests, tortured detainees, and executed political dissidents. The Iranian people have suffered greatly under the regime’s iron fist, and inviting a member of the IRGC to an event like the World Economic Forum undermines the struggle for freedom and human rights in Iran.
The Swiss government and the World Economic Forum have a responsibility to stand against state-sponsored terrorism and human rights abuses. By denying Amir-Abdollahian’s visa and rescinding his invitation, they would send a powerful message that the international community does not condone or support these actions. Allowing him to speak at the forum only legitimizes the regime and emboldens its oppressive tactics.
We call on the Swiss government and the World Economic Forum to reconsider their decision and take a stand for justice, freedom, and human rights. It is time to prioritize the welfare and well-being of the Iranian people over diplomatic niceties and business opportunities. Iran’s regime cannot be allowed to continue its reign of terror with impunity, and international organizations must do their part in holding them accountable.”
