US strikes target Houthi missiles in Yemen
U.S. Forces Strike Houthi Targets in Yemen
In a bold move, U.S. forces in the Middle East launched new strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen early Tuesday morning. Central Command officials reported that four Houthi anti-ship ballistic missiles, poised for launch from Houthi-controlled areas, were successfully destroyed.
“These missiles were prepared to launch from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and presented an imminent threat to both merchant and U.S. Navy ships in the region,”
Hours later, the Houthis retaliated by launching an anti-ship ballistic missile that struck the M/V Zografia, a Maltese-flagged bulk carrier. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the attack.
Since mid-November 2023, the Houthis have carried out approximately 30 attacks on commercial vessels in the waterways off Yemen’s coasts. This relentless aggression has forced shipping companies to consider rerouting their cargo around the southern tip of South Africa, resulting in longer and costlier journeys.
Striking Back Against Houthi Aggression
The U.S. and its Western allies, after issuing numerous warnings, finally took decisive action. They launched a series of strikes, targeting the Houthis’ capabilities to carry out these attacks. Over 60 targets at 16 militant locations were hit in the first wave of strikes, with additional strikes launched the following day.
“We believe by taking away some of their capability, degrading that capability … can have an impact on the effectiveness of future strikes by taking away, degrading some of their capability, certainly makes it harder for them to conduct these strikes,”
U.S. officials anticipated the Houthis’ response, but they remain confident in the success of the strikes.
“Initial indications are that we had good effects,” stated Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder. Another senior military official added that the strikes had significant effects.

The Houthis claim that their attacks on commercial vessels are in protest of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza. However, it is important to note that they have targeted vessels with no ties to Israel.
U.S. leaders are determined to prevent a regional conflict in the Middle East, especially given the heightened tensions since Hamas’s terrorist attacks in Israel and the subsequent military response in Gaza.
How can the United States and the international community contribute to resolving the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict in Yemen

The ongoing conflict in Yemen between the Houthi rebels and the internationally recognized government has been marked by violence and instability. The Houthi rebels, who are aligned with Iran, have been launching attacks against neighboring countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The United States, along with a coalition of Arab states, has been supporting the internationally recognized government in Yemen and has been conducting airstrikes against Houthi targets since 2015.
The recent strikes by U.S. forces against Houthi targets in Yemen highlight the United States’ commitment to defending its interests and those of its allies in the region. The U.S. Central Command has stated that these strikes were necessary to prevent the Houthi rebels from launching missiles and posing a threat to both merchant and U.S. Navy ships in the area. It is clear that the United States will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the free flow of commerce or endanger the safety of its naval assets in the region.
The Houthi rebels, however, retaliated against the U.S. strikes by launching an anti-ship ballistic missile at the U.S.S. Mason. This act of aggression demonstrates the ongoing volatility and danger in the region. The United States and its allies must remain vigilant and prepared to respond to any further attacks or provocations.
The conflict in Yemen has created a humanitarian crisis, with thousands of civilians killed and millions displaced from their homes. It is essential that all parties involved in the conflict find a peaceful resolution and work towards a stable and prosperous future for the people of Yemen. The United States, along with the international community, must continue to support efforts to bring an end to the violence and promote a political solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
The recent strikes by U.S. forces against Houthi targets in Yemen serve as a reminder of the complex and dangerous situation in the Middle East. The United States plays a crucial role in maintaining regional stability and protecting its interests in the face of ongoing threats. It is essential that the United States continues to coordinate closely with its allies and partners in the region to address these threats and work towards a peaceful and prosperous future for all.
