A New Strain of COVID-19⁤ Experimented on Humanized Mice ⁢in⁣ China

A research group in Beijing, China, has reportedly been conducting ‍experiments on a new strain of COVID-19 in humanized mice. This strain is said⁢ to‌ be 100% lethal.

The study involved researchers ⁣from the Beijing University of ⁢Chemical Technology and Nanjing University.

According to⁢ the study, the fatal virus, known as “GX_P2V,” attacked the brains of ⁢mice that were genetically engineered to resemble humans.

“This underscores a spillover‍ risk ⁣of GX_P2V into humans‌ and provides a unique model for understanding the pathogenic ‌mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses,” the authors wrote.

The ⁤deadly virus is a ⁣mutated version of GX/2017, a coronavirus strain discovered in Malaysian pangolins in 2017 and mammals in warm areas.

The research states that ⁢all the mice died⁢ within eight days, which is considered “surprisingly rapid.”

Reports indicate that the ⁣virus infected various parts ‍of the humanized mice,⁤ including ‌their bones, eyes, lungs, tracheas, and brains.

Prior to their death, the mice experienced extreme weight loss, a hunched posture, sluggish movement, and their eyes turned completely white.

However, the study’s results do not fully indicate how this virus would ⁢affect humans ⁢in comparison.

Francois Balloux, an epidemiology expert at University College London’s Genetics Institute, criticized the research as ”terrible” and “scientifically totally pointless.”

“I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting‌ a weird breed of humanized mice with a random virus. Conversely, I could see how much stuff might go wrong,” the⁤ professor said. “The preprint does not specify the biosafety level and biosafety precautions used for the research, the absence of this information raises the concerning possibility that part or all of this research, like the research in Wuhan in 2016-2019 that likely caused the Covid-19 pandemic, recklessly was performed without the minimal biosafety containment and practices essential for research with potential pandemic pathogens.”

The Wuhan Institute‌ of Virology in⁤ China, ⁤which has been‌ associated‍ with lab leak⁢ claims regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, does ⁣not seem to be involved in this 2024 study.

⁤ A New Strain of COVID-19 Experimented on⁣ Humanized Mice in China

A⁢ recent study conducted by a research⁤ group in Beijing, China, ⁤has ⁢raised concerns after it was revealed that they have been experimenting on a new strain of COVID-19 in humanized mice. This strain is reported‍ to be 100% lethal. ⁣The study involved researchers from the Beijing⁣ University ⁣of Chemical ‍Technology and Nanjing University.

According to the study, ⁢the fatal virus,‌ known as “GX_P2V,” targeted the brains of mice that were ‍genetically ⁢engineered to resemble humans. The researchers believe that this experiment highlights⁣ a spillover risk of GX_P2V into⁢ humans and provides a unique model for better understanding the pathogenic mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2-related viruses.

The ⁢deadly virus is a mutated version of GX/2017, a coronavirus strain⁤ that was initially discovered in Malaysian pangolins in 2017 ⁢as well as mammals in warm areas. The research revealed that all the mice that were infected⁢ with the virus died ⁤within eight days, ‌which is considered surprisingly‍ rapid. The virus was found to affect various parts of the humanized mice, including their bones, eyes, lungs, tracheas, and brains. As a result of the infection, the mice experienced extreme weight loss, a hunched ⁤posture, sluggish movement, and their eyes turned ⁤completely white. However, it is important to note ⁢that the study’s results do not provide a ‌complete indication of how ⁤this virus would affect humans in comparison.

The study has faced criticism from Francois Balloux, ⁢an epidemiology expert at University College London’s Genetics Institute. Balloux described the research as “terrible” and “scientifically totally pointless.” He expressed concerns about the biosafety ⁤level and ⁤precautions‍ taken ‍during the research, raising the possibility that part⁤ or all of‌ this research, like the research‌ in Wuhan from 2016-2019, was conducted without the necessary biosafety containment measures essential for handling potential pandemic pathogens.

It is‍ essential to note that the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, which has been ‍associated with lab leak claims regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, does not appear to be involved in this 2024 ⁤study.

As further research and investigations unfold, it is crucial⁤ for scientists‍ and researchers to prioritize the safety and containment of potentially dangerous pathogens. The world continues⁣ to face the devastating consequences of ⁣the ⁤COVID-19 pandemic, and it is vital to ensure that research is conducted responsibly, with the highest regard ‍for biosafety and public health.
