The lawsuit alleges that Dr. Jerry Teague, the dentist responsible for administering anesthesia, gave Lugo an excessive amount without intubating her first. The suit also implicates two other dentists and the clinic as defendants.
Lugo had visited the clinic for “cavitations” and the extraction of a root canal-treated tooth, according to the report. However, the events that unfolded were far from routine. Prior to treating Lugo, Dr. Teague had disappeared, only to resurface the next day to administer fentanyl, midazolam, and lidocaine. The lawsuit reveals that Teague had recently received a terminal cancer diagnosis, with less than a year to live.
Shockingly, neither Teague nor any other dentists at the clinic obtained informed consent from Lugo before the procedure, as stated in the lawsuit.
Once the severity of Lugo’s condition became apparent, she was rushed to a local hospital. Sadly, Dr. Teague passed away two weeks later at the age of 70. Lugo now relies on a tracheotomy to breathe and resides in a specialized neurological facility.
The lawsuit, filed by Espana, seeks damages from the clinic, and a settlement has been reached with Teague’s estate, according to the report.
