Alec Baldwin charged by grand jury for deadly shooting on Rust film set

Alec Baldwin Indicted on Involuntary Manslaughter Charge in Rust Shooting

A New Mexico grand jury has indicted actor Alec Baldwin on a charge⁢ of involuntary manslaughter, reigniting⁣ the investigation into the tragic shooting incident on the set of the movie Rust in 2021.⁤ Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life in the‍ incident.

The indictment comes after prosecutors initially dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin in April. However, they later reversed ‌their ‌decision and decided ‌to refile charges after receiving new analysis of the gun involved in the⁣ shooting.

Baldwin,‍ who is both the lead actor and a co-producer of Rust, was pointing the ⁤gun at Hutchins when it unexpectedly discharged, causing her death and ⁤injuring director Joel Souza. Baldwin maintains that he pulled back the hammer but did not ⁤press ‍the trigger,‍ and the gun fired.

Legal⁢ Proceedings and Civil Lawsuits

Following the presentation of ‌charges to the grand jury, the judges agreed to put several civil lawsuits ⁣on hold. These lawsuits⁣ were filed by members of the ⁣film crew and others seeking compensation from Baldwin and other Rust producers.

The shooting took place on October ‍21, 2021, during⁢ the ⁣filming of⁤ Rust, a ⁤western movie in which Alec Baldwin⁣ stars as the lead actor and also serves as ⁤a ‍producer. Tragically, while rehearsing a scene, Baldwin discharged a prop firearm,⁢ unaware that it was⁢ loaded with a live round. Hutchins⁣ was airlifted to a nearby ‍hospital but succumbed to⁣ her injuries, while Souza survived after ‌undergoing surgery. The incident sent‌ shockwaves throughout the‍ film industry and raised questions about⁣ on-set safety measures and the use of firearms‍ in film productions.

Following the ⁢initial investigation, the Santa Fe County District ‌Attorney’s Office decided not to charge Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter.
