Homeland Security Chair confident in votes to impeach Mayorkas

Republicans in the House ⁤Have⁢ Enough Support ‌to Impeach Homeland Security Secretary⁣ Alejandro Mayorkas Over Border ‍Crisis

According to a top Republican, there is sufficient support in the GOP-led‍ House to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling ‍of the border ⁣crisis. Homeland Security Chairman Mark‌ Green (R-TN) raised expectations during an interview with Fox⁢ News anchor Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday ⁢Morning Futures” about the next steps after his panel held a second impeachment hearing last week.

“Right now, we are assembling articles of impeachment ⁢to present to our committee.⁢ We will mark ⁢those up in committee ‍very shortly ‌after getting back [the week of January 29]. And ⁣then, passing ⁢the committee, they will go to the floor for a vote on the floor,” Green said.

The chairman suggested ⁤that a House floor vote could take place sometime after early February, highlighting ‍the importance of attendance as Republicans only hold ⁣a slim majority in the chamber.

“One of our challenges is just the ⁤folks⁢ that are out for health ⁤issues ⁤right now, but ‍once those individuals get back, I anticipate a very quick ‌vote on ‍the ⁤floor,” he said.

Looking ahead to the House ‌floor proceedings, Green expressed confidence that they have enough votes to impeach Mayorkas. However, he was less certain about whether Mayorkas would be‌ removed from ‌his ‌position.

“I certainly ⁤hope so, Maria,” he said. “Look, this ‍guy⁣ has ‍subverted the laws passed by Congress, ignoring⁤ a co-equal branch of government. It’s very clear the law says ‘shall detain.’ And Mayorkas has done everything not to detain. In fact, he’s created systems that — what he calls lawful parole, but it’s actually totally contradicting the Immigration and Nationality Act that ‌was passed by this Congress.”

Democrats in‍ the House have criticized ‍the impeachment proceedings as a‌ “political stunt,” while the White‌ House has‌ gone ‍as ‍far as to claim ⁣the endeavor is “unconstitutional.”

Green emphasized the role of‌ Congress in writing laws and the executive branch in‍ implementing ‌them, arguing⁢ that Mayorkas is violating this ‌fundamental separation of powers.

“If a Cabinet secretary doesn’t believe in ‍those laws, he should run for Congress and come over here and change them. He shouldn’t, just like a ‍king, do whatever he wants,” ⁤Green said. “And ⁤that’s basically⁢ what Mayorkas has done. And that’s why we’re going after ⁤this impeachment. It’s ⁤about the ⁤Constitution, Maria. It’s about the founding principles of ⁤our country, separation of power, an Executive Branch that executes ⁤and a Legislative Branch that writes⁣ the laws. He doesn’t get to write the laws or pick and choose.”

What evidence and testimonies have ⁢Republican lawmakers presented⁣ during the ‌impeachment hearings to support ⁤their claims against Mayorkas

Strong vote in favor of impeachment,” Green expressed.

Republicans have been highly critical of Mayorkas’ performance as Homeland Security Secretary, particularly⁢ regarding his handling ‌of the border ‌crisis. They argue that his policies and actions have contributed to the surge ‌in illegal border crossings and the overcrowding of detention facilities. Many Republicans believe that Mayorkas has failed ‍to enforce immigration laws effectively ⁣and has prioritized the interests of ⁢undocumented immigrants over those‌ of American ⁤citizens.

One of the main concerns raised by Republicans is the implementation of the Biden administration’s immigration policies, such as the suspension of border ⁢wall construction and the rollback of various Trump-era immigration policies. They assert that these decisions ⁤have created a perception of lax immigration enforcement, leading to a significant increase in illegal border crossings and putting American national⁢ security at risk.

During the impeachment hearings, Republican⁢ lawmakers presented evidence and testimonies to support their claims against ⁤Mayorkas. They highlighted the overcrowded conditions in⁢ detention facilities, the ⁤lack of resources and‍ manpower, and the reported cases of‌ individuals with criminal records being released into the United States. Republicans argue that‍ these issues demonstrate Mayorkas’ failure⁣ to ‍effectively manage and secure‌ the border.

Furthermore, Republicans criticize Mayorkas’ response to the border crisis, noting his reluctance to acknowledge the severity ⁤of the situation and‌ his refusal to ⁤consider it a crisis. They argue that this lack ⁤of⁤ acknowledgement not only undermines the‍ urgency of ⁢addressing the issue but also hinders‍ efforts to ‌implement‌ effective solutions.

The ⁣impeachment campaign against Mayorkas is seen⁣ as a significant⁢ challenge for Republicans as they navigate their way through the impeachment process in a‌ narrowly divided House. With a slim majority, Republicans will need to ⁣secure the support of their entire caucus and potentially gain some bipartisan support to successfully impeach Mayorkas.

While the impeachment ⁣process is not expected to result in Mayorkas’ removal from office,‌ it signifies ⁤the strong opposition and disapproval from Republicans regarding ‌his⁤ performance as Homeland ‌Security Secretary. It also serves as a ⁤political move to hold Mayorkas accountable for‍ what they perceive as failures ⁤and shortcomings‌ in his role.

The impeachment of a Homeland Security Secretary is a relatively rare occurrence,‍ highlighting the significance of‌ the current border crisis and its political ramifications. As the nation continues to grapple with immigration challenges, the ⁣debate⁤ around Mayorkas’ handling of‍ the border crisis will likely intensify and play a crucial role in shaping immigration policies ‌and public perception in the coming months.

In the ⁤meantime, Republicans in the House are⁤ actively organizing ⁤their impeachment efforts,‌ focusing on building support and gathering evidence against Mayorkas. Whether or not they are successful in impeaching⁣ the Homeland Security Secretary remains to be seen, but their efforts demonstrate the ‌determination of Republicans to address what they perceive ‍as a critical issue for national security ⁢and immigration enforcement.
