Chicago rideshare drivers seeking safety solutions
Chicago Gig Alliance Demands Action to Address Rideshare Driver Robberies
The recent surge in rideshare driver robberies on Chicago’s West Side has sparked outrage and concern among drivers and organizers. Lori Simmons, a leading figure in the Chicago Gig Alliance, is spearheading the movement to demand action from city officials.
“It’s truly terrifying,” Simmons expressed to The Center Square. ”Having been a full-time rideshare driver for five years and still working part-time, I know many people who rely on this job. It’s disheartening to see individuals taking advantage of the platform’s vulnerabilities and the inherent dangers of the job.”
Simmons believes that much of the danger stems from the lack of information drivers have about their passengers. Unlike traditional taxi services, rideshare drivers are not required to know the legal names of their passengers or have access to their photos.
“We have no idea who will step into our cars, making it easy for someone to exploit the situation. They can use fake names or simply approach a rideshare vehicle and the driver won’t suspect a thing,” Simmons explained. “I’ve been trying to gather more information from the police about these incidents, but they seem reluctant to discuss it.”
The Chicago Police Department issued a community alert, highlighting that all the attacks occurred while drivers were either picking up or dropping off passengers. The same area has also witnessed the tragic deaths of two rideshare drivers. In a recent incident, a driver was shot in the chest and critically injured during an attempted robbery in the Austin neighborhood.
The Chicago Gig Alliance has been advocating for policies that prioritize driver safety, including the Chicago Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance. This ordinance aims to increase wages and provide greater job security for rideshare drivers.
“We are collaborating with the city of Chicago to find ways to mitigate the dangers of this job,” Simmons stated. “At the very least, rideshare companies should conduct thorough background checks on their users. We may not have control over what happens outside the vehicle, but we deserve to feel safe from robbery or harm by our own passengers.”
Simmons emphasized the importance of implementing measures such as passenger ID requirements and providing drivers with photos of their passengers. She also highlighted the facial recognition process that drivers must undergo multiple times during their shifts to verify their identity and use the rideshare app.
With the new administration of Mayor Brandon Johnson, Simmons is hopeful for change. The Chicago Gig Alliance was recently invited to participate in a hearing where a committee of rideshare drivers, mail carriers, and bus drivers worked on developing safety solutions.
“Previously, we struggled to engage with mayors, but with the new administration, we are grateful for the opportunity to be involved,” Simmons shared. “While we are still in the early stages, I have hope that we can find solutions to make drivers safer.”
How does the Chicago Gig Alliance propose to enhance safety measures for rideshare drivers through a photo verification system
Ctant to share any details with us. It’s frustrating and it leaves us feeling even more vulnerable.”
In response to the increasing concerns, the Chicago Gig Alliance is demanding several actions to address the issue. Firstly, they are calling for a more comprehensive screening process for rideshare passengers. This includes requesting that rideshare companies implement stricter identification verification measures, such as requiring passengers to provide a valid ID before being able to use the service.
Additionally, the alliance is urging city officials to collaborate with rideshare companies to develop a system that would allow drivers to have access to their passengers’ photos before picking them up. “A simple photo verification system, where drivers can match their passenger’s photo with their ID, would enhance safety measures significantly,” Simmons stated.
Furthermore, the Chicago Gig Alliance is advocating for increased police presence and patrols in areas with high instances of rideshare driver robberies. This would not only provide a deterrent for potential criminals but also offer a sense of security to the drivers who frequent those areas.
Simmons emphasized that this issue is not only a concern for rideshare drivers but for the entire community. “When drivers are targeted and robbed, it disrupts the entire transportation system. It affects people’s livelihoods and safety,” she explained. “By addressing this problem, we can create a safer environment for all residents of Chicago.”
The Chicago Gig Alliance is urging city officials to take immediate action to address these concerns. They are requesting meetings with representatives from the mayor’s office, rideshare companies, and law enforcement agencies to discuss potential solutions and implement necessary changes.
“We cannot continue to ignore these mounting incidents,” Simmons warned. “It’s time for action. We need stronger measures to protect rideshare drivers and ensure the safety of our communities.”
As the rideshare industry continues to grow and evolve, it is crucial for cities like Chicago to address the safety concerns that come along with it. By listening to the demands of organizations like the Chicago Gig Alliance and working together with all stakeholders involved, the city has the opportunity to create a safer and more secure environment for rideshare drivers and passengers alike.
