Democrats losing faith in media
Americans rate journalists slightly above lawyers and car salesmen in terms of ‘honesty and ethical standards’
The American public’s faith in journalism is at an all-time low, according to the results of a recent Gallup survey in which just 19 percent of respondents gave journalists a “high” or “very high” rating for “honesty and ethical standards.”
The historic decline was driven by the fact that even partisan Democrats are starting to lose faith in the partisan Democrats who comprise the mainstream media. Just 34 percent of Democrats rated journalists highly in terms of honesty and ethical standards, according to the survey, down from a high of 54 percent during the Trump administration in 2018.
Democrats are still far more likely to give journalists high marks on honesty and ethics. Just 17 percent of independents and 8 percent of Republicans offered similar ratings in the survey, which asked respondents to rate the honesty and ethical standards of nearly two dozen professions. Nurses received the best marks, with 78 percent of respondents rating them positively. Journalists were rated well below doctors (56 percent), police officers (45 percent), and college teachers (42 percent), but slightly better than lawyers (16 percent), car salesmen (8 percent), and members of Congress (6 percent).
The survey results were in line with those from another Gallup survey published in October, when just 32 percent of respondents said they had at least “a fair amount” of trust in the media to report the news “fully, accurately and fairly.” That figure tied the lowest on record since Gallup began measuring public trust in media back in 1972, and while 58 percent of Democrats reported at least some trust in the media, it marked a significant decline from the 76 percent of Democrats who said the same in 2018.
Americans who aren’t partisan Democrats have long abandoned their faith in the mainstream media. They have watched time and time again as liberal journalists attack Republicans (and defend Democrats) in a manner that is neither fair nor balanced. Alas, the liberal journalists refuse to believe that they are part of the problem. They are the problem.

Join the Club: Democrats Finally Starting to Lose Faith in Media
The American public’s faith in journalism is at an all-time low, according to the results of a recent Gallup survey in which just 19 percent of respondents gave journalists a “high” or “very high” rating for “honesty and ethical standards.”
This historic decline has been driven by the fact that even partisan Democrats are starting to lose faith in the partisan Democrats who comprise the mainstream media. While Democrats’ faith in journalists has decreased, they are still far more likely to give journalists high marks on honesty and ethics compared to independents and Republicans. Only 17 percent of independents and 8 percent of Republicans offered similar ratings in the survey. The survey asked respondents to rate the honesty and ethical standards of nearly two dozen professions, and nurses received the best marks, with 78 percent of respondents rating them positively.
Journalists were rated well below doctors, police officers, and college teachers, but slightly better than lawyers and car salesmen. The fact that journalists are ranked only slightly above lawyers and car salesmen in terms of honesty and ethical standards is concerning. It highlights the public’s growing disillusionment with the media and its perception of bias.
This decline in trust has significant implications for the media and its ability to fulfill its role as the Fourth Estate. A strong democracy relies on a well-informed public, and if the public loses faith in the media, it undermines the media’s capacity to hold those in power accountable.
The decline in trust among Democrats is particularly noteworthy. The party traditionally aligns with the media, and the media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion. If Democrats are starting to question the honesty and ethical standards of journalists, it could signal a broader shift in public perception and political dynamics.
However, it is important to note that not all journalists are partisan and biased. There are still many reporters and news organizations dedicated to delivering unbiased and objective reporting. It is crucial for media outlets to regain the public’s trust by ensuring transparency, providing accurate information, and avoiding sensationalism and political bias.
Ultimately, the decline in faith in the media should serve as a wake-up call for journalists and news organizations. It is a call to reevaluate their practices, rebuild public trust, and restore the integrity of journalism. The role of the media in a democracy is significant, and it is crucial that journalists strive to uphold the highest standards of honesty and ethics to regain the public’s confidence.
In conclusion, the Gallup survey highlights the alarming decline in the American public’s faith in journalism. The fact that even partisan Democrats are starting to lose faith in the media is a significant development. It is a reminder that journalists need to redouble their efforts to deliver unbiased, accurate, and ethical reporting. Restoring trust in the media is essential for the health of our democracy.
