“Well, folks, I’m here in Poland, I was visiting Auschwitz with Elon Musk today,” Shapiro began, acknowledging that he hadn’t had the chance to respond to the news of DeSantis’ exit earlier. He continued, “Obviously, Governor DeSantis was my favorite candidate in the race. I believe he would have been the best president among all the candidates. However, the Republican voting base has spoken, and they want Donald Trump. And you know what? That’s their prerogative.”
Shapiro expressed his confidence in DeSantis’ future, saying, “I believe there will be another opportunity for Ron DeSantis. He is the best governor in the country.”

“With that said, this primary race — as I said after Iowa – is over,” Shapiro concluded. “It remains over. New Hampshire will be won by Donald Trump. It’s time for the party to unite behind the candidate who will defeat Joe Biden — and that candidate is Donald Trump.”
Shapiro made a similar statement after the Iowa caucuses, where Trump emerged as the clear winner with 51% of the vote, followed by DeSantis with 21% and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley with 19%. He compared Trump’s dominance to Secretariat’s legendary victory in the 1973 Belmont Stakes, stating, “Trump is so far ahead that the rest of the field can’t even see him. He is the de facto nominee, preparing to face Joe Biden in the general election.”
What potential impact does Shapiro foresee DeSantis’ decision having on other Republican candidates in the race
) November 12, 2023
In the video, Shapiro begins by acknowledging DeSantis’ decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, describing it as a surprising development. He highlights DeSantis’ rise in popularity and strong conservative record as factors that made him a formidable candidate in the race. Shapiro notes that DeSantis was widely considered a potential frontrunner, given his successes as Governor of Florida and his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
Shapiro then moves on to emphasize the significance of DeSantis’ endorsement of former President Donald Trump. He describes it as a strategic move by DeSantis, recognizing Trump’s influence within the Republican Party and the large base of supporters he commands. Shapiro suggests that DeSantis, by endorsing Trump, is aligning himself with the former president’s policies and principles, which have resonated with a significant portion of the party’s base.
Furthermore, Shapiro highlights the unique position that DeSantis finds himself in, with a solid conservative record and a strong appeal to both the Trump base and traditional conservatives. This combination, Shapiro argues, gives DeSantis a strong chance of being considered as a potential running mate for Trump if the former president decides to seek reelection in 2024. Shapiro speculates that DeSantis’ endorsement of Trump could position him as a viable contender for the vice-presidential slot.
Shapiro also addresses the potential impact of DeSantis’ decision on other Republican candidates in the race. He suggests that DeSantis’ departure from the race may create a void that other candidates will try to fill, potentially reshuffling the dynamics of the primary. Shapiro speculates that this could lead to a more crowded field and increased competition among candidates vying for the conservative vote.
In conclusion, Shapiro views DeSantis’ decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race and endorse Trump as a significant development in the political landscape. He sees this move as a strategic decision by DeSantis to align himself with Trump and position himself as a potential running mate. Shapiro anticipates that this decision may have ripple effects on other candidates in the race and expects increased competition among conservatives vying for the nomination.
