Harvard worker harasses Jewish student suing school over anti-Semitism, seeks debate on 9/11 conspiracies
A Harvard University Employee Challenges Jewish Student to Debate on Israel’s Role in 9/11
A Harvard University employee, Gustavo Espada, has sparked controversy by challenging a Jewish student, Shabbos Kestenbaum, to a debate on Israel’s role in the 9/11 attacks. The email, obtained by The Daily Wire, reveals Espada’s provocative invitation and his intention to use a puppet or potted plant to represent Kestenbaum if he fails to show up.
“I invite you to debate me today at the Cambridge Street overpass 12-1, don’t miss it! If you don’t show up, I will use a puppet or potted plant to represent you!”
Espada, an active university employee, sent the email from his official Harvard account, titled “invitation to debate Israeli role in 9/11.” He even offered to organize a more formal debate in a large venue on campus.
According to Harvard University’s website, Espada works as the financial and systems coordinator for the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. He is also a Harvard alumnus and a member of the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers.
In the email, Espada clarified his stance, stating, “PS stop saying I hate Jews unless that is something you want. I hate Israel and Zionism with a passion, and you know full well they are two different things.”
Kestenbaum, along with other students, recently filed a lawsuit against Harvard University, accusing the institution of failing to address anti-Semitism and protect Jewish students from harassment. Kestenbaum notified the Cambridge Police Department about Espada’s actions and expressed disappointment in Harvard’s lack of concrete action against anti-Semitism on campus.
“The time for task forces, statements, and apologies are over,” Kestenbaum stated. “I want action, and I want it yesterday.”
Espada also referenced defaced posters of Israeli hostages, which were plastered with 9/11 conspiracy theories. Kestenbaum documented these incidents on his social media account.

Espada’s X account, under the name “9/11 Guy,” contains numerous posts promoting conspiracy theories about Jews and Israel. He has called for the destruction of Israel and questioned the legitimacy of attacks against Israeli civilians.
In light of Espada’s controversial views and actions, Kestenbaum and other students are demanding more than just apologies and statements from Harvard. They seek tangible measures to combat anti-Semitism on campus.

Espada’s history of promoting 9/11 conspiracy theories dates back 18 years, as reported by The Lowell Sun in 2006. He has spent significant time distributing literature, blogging, and engaging in discussions about his views on 9/11.
“I don’t think anybody has a 100 percent view of what actually did happen on 9/11,” Espada stated at the time.
What is the responsibility of Harvard University in fostering an environment where sensitive topics can be debated in a respectful and constructive manner
Rvard University alleging discrimination against Jewish students. The lawsuit claims that Harvard has created a hostile environment for Jewish students and has implemented policies that discriminate against them. The invitation to debate Israel’s role in 9/11 comes as a response to this lawsuit and adds fuel to the already contentious situation.
The 9/11 attacks, which took place in 2001, were a series of coordinated terrorist attacks carried out by the extremist group Al-Qaeda. The attacks resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and had a profound impact on the United States and the world. The topic of Israel’s role in the attacks has been the subject of conspiracy theories and misinformation for many years.
Espada’s invitation to debate Israel’s role in the 9/11 attacks is concerning on multiple levels. Firstly, it is a highly sensitive and controversial topic that requires careful consideration and factual analysis. Espada’s intention to use a puppet or potted plant to represent Kestenbaum if he fails to show up is disrespectful and undermines the seriousness of the topic.
Furthermore, the fact that Espada is using his official Harvard email account and identifying himself as a Harvard employee raises questions about the university’s position on the matter. While individuals have a right to express their opinions and engage in debates, they should do so in a respectful and professional manner. Taking such a provocative and disrespectful approach not only harms the reputation of the university but also creates an environment that is hostile to meaningful dialogue and understanding.
Harvard University has a responsibility to address this issue promptly and ensure that its employees uphold the values of respect, tolerance, and intellectual rigor. The university should provide clarity on its stance regarding the lawsuit filed by Jewish students and take appropriate action in response to Espada’s behavior. It is crucial to create an inclusive and respectful environment where all students, regardless of their background or beliefs, feel safe and supported.
Debates and discussions on sensitive topics can be productive and enlightening when conducted with professionalism and respect. However, Espada’s challenge and his intention to use mockery and disrespect as tools in the debate detract from any potential value in engaging in a dialogue.
It is essential for institutions like Harvard University to foster an environment where differences of opinion are celebrated and debated in a respectful and constructive manner. By taking the necessary steps to address this issue, Harvard can reaffirm its commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to creating an inclusive and respectful campus community.
