Trump and Biden may meet consecutively with Teamsters union
Trump and Biden Compete for Teamsters Union Endorsement
Former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are vying for the coveted endorsement of the Teamsters union ahead of the 2024 election. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has announced that both candidates will have the opportunity to meet with the union in separate roundtable discussions.
Trump’s Roundtable
The union’s Rank-and-file Presidential Roundtables will kick off on Wednesday with a meeting between the Teamsters and Trump. This will provide Trump with a platform to address union members, the Executive Board, President Sean M. O’Brien, and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman at the Teamsters headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Biden’s Roundtable
Biden has also been invited to participate in a roundtable discussion with the union on the same day. This will give him the opportunity to engage with union members and key leaders at the Teamsters headquarters.
Biden’s campaign did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner.
“Our members want to hear from all candidates of all parties about what they plan to do for working people as President,” said O’Brien. “Teamsters are essential to every trade industry in this country. Our union wants every candidate to know that there are 1.3 million Teamsters nationwide whose votes will not be taken for granted. Workers’ voices must be heard.”
Other Candidates
O’Brien has already met with several other candidates during the 2024 cycle, including Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Marianne Williamson, Cornel West, and Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN). Republican candidate Nikki Haley has also received an invitation from the Teamsters.
Haley’s campaign did not provide comment to the Washington Examiner.
The Teamsters have not yet endorsed any candidate for the 2024 presidential election. However, Biden recently received the endorsement of United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain.
Strong Support for Labor Unions
The Teamsters meetings with Trump and potentially Biden come at a time when approval of labor unions is on the rise. According to Gallup, 67% of the public reported approving of labor unions in 2023, a significant increase from the record-low of 48% in 2009. Additionally, 61% believe that these unions help, rather than hurt, the economy, which is a record high. Furthermore, 43% expressed a desire for unions to have more influence in America.

How has President Trump’s approach to trade deals and tariffs impacted American workers and industries?
Quarters in Washington, D.C. Trump’s meeting with the union comes as no surprise, as he has been a vocal advocate for American workers throughout his presidency. His “America First” agenda placed a heavy emphasis on protecting domestic industries and promoting job growth within the United States.
During his roundtable discussion, Trump is expected to highlight his record on pro-worker policies, such as renegotiating trade deals like NAFTA and implementing tariffs to level the playing field for American workers. He will likely tout his administration’s efforts to bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States and his strong stance on protecting American industries from unfair foreign competition.
Furthermore, Trump may emphasize his support for the construction of infrastructure projects like pipelines and highways, which would lead to an increase in job opportunities for Teamsters members. He will likely highlight his investment in vocational training and apprenticeship programs to ensure that workers have the necessary skills to thrive in a changing job market.
Biden’s Roundtable
President Biden, on the other hand, will meet with the Teamsters union on Thursday to make his case for their endorsement. Throughout his campaign, Biden positioned himself as a champion for working families and a strong supporter of labor unions. He has promised to prioritize the needs of American workers and rebuild the middle class.
During his roundtable discussion, Biden is expected to highlight his administration’s accomplishments in protecting workers’ rights and promoting fair wages. He will likely discuss his efforts to raise the minimum wage and expand access to affordable healthcare and childcare, all of which directly impact Teamsters members.
Biden may also stress his commitment to strengthening workers’ bargaining power and combating wage stagnation. He will likely highlight his support for the PRO Act, a bill that aims to protect and expand labor rights, including the right to unionize. This legislation, if passed, would provide greater job security and better working conditions for Teamsters members.
Additionally, Biden is likely to discuss his plans for infrastructure investment, which would create new job opportunities for Teamsters. He will emphasize his commitment to rebuilding America’s roads, bridges, and transit systems, creating millions of well-paying jobs in the process.
The Union’s Decision
The Teamsters union plays a crucial role in determining who receives their endorsement, as their support can mobilize thousands of union members and provide a significant boost to a candidate’s campaign. Both Trump and Biden will need to convince the union’s leadership that they have the best interests of American workers at heart and are committed to advocating for their rights and well-being.
The union will carefully consider each candidate’s track record, policy proposals, and their plans for addressing the pressing issues facing union members, such as job security, fair wages, and healthcare. They will evaluate whether the candidates have a comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing working Americans and whether their proposed solutions will lead to meaningful change.
Ultimately, the Teamsters union’s endorsement will go to the candidate who demonstrates a genuine commitment to the needs and concerns of American workers. While both Trump and Biden have the opportunity to make their case, it is up to the union’s leadership and its members to decide which candidate best represents their interests. Their decision could have a significant impact on the 2024 election and the future of American labor.
