RFK Jr. considers running for Libertarian Party
Independent Presidential Candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Open to Joining Libertarian Party
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an independent presidential candidate, has expressed his openness to joining forces with the Libertarian Party in his quest to secure a spot on the ballot in all 50 states before the November election.
In an interview with CNN’s Michael Smerconish, Kennedy was asked if he would consider becoming the Libertarian candidate, which would guarantee him ballot access nationwide. Kennedy responded, “That’s something that we’re looking at. We have a really good relationship with the Libertarian Party.” He also mentioned his plans to speak at the California Libertarian Party convention and potentially deliver remarks in New York.

Kennedy also expressed optimism about his signature-gathering campaign and his recently-announced effort to establish a new political party in several states. He believes this gives him an advantage in achieving ballot access, particularly in North Carolina and Texas.
The nephew of former President John F. Kennedy and son of former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy initially sought the Democratic Party’s nomination for the 2024 contest. However, he switched to an independent run due to concerns about the Democrats’ election process, including the lack of debates.
Recent polls show Kennedy receiving double-digit support in a match-up against President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. This comes as voters show little enthusiasm for a 2020 rematch.
Smerconish played audio of Angela McArdle, the head of the Libertarian Party, speaking positively about Kennedy on his radio show. McArdle expressed admiration for Kennedy’s stance against mandates and lockdowns and stated that they would remain on friendly terms.
The host encouraged Kennedy to “make some news” and suggested that McArdle seemed open to granting him the Libertarian Party’s ballot position. Kennedy responded by saying that they are in talks with the Libertarian Party and share many of their values, but he couldn’t provide a headline-worthy update at that moment.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s interest in potentially joining the Libertarian Party comes as no surprise to those familiar with his political ideology and advocacy. Kennedy, the son of former United States Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, has long been known for his progressive views on a range of issues, including environmental protection, civil rights, and social justice.
While some may view the Libertarian Party as being on the opposite end of the political spectrum from Kennedy’s progressive values, there are areas where their ideologies align. Both Kennedy and the Libertarian Party are strong advocates for personal freedom and individual liberty. They both prioritize limiting government intervention in personal lives and support a more decentralized approach to governance.
In recent years, the Libertarian Party has gained increased attention and support, particularly among disillusioned voters who feel unrepresented by the two major parties. The party’s commitment to small government, fiscal responsibility, and non-interventionist foreign policy has attracted individuals from various political backgrounds who are seeking an alternative to the mainstream political establishment.
By joining forces with the Libertarian Party, Kennedy would not only gain nationwide ballot access, but also the support and backing of a growing political movement. The party’s infrastructure and resources would provide Kennedy with the platform and organization needed to effectively campaign across all 50 states. This alliance could potentially disrupt the two-party system and offer voters a fresh perspective and alternative choice in the upcoming election.
However, it is important to note that joining a political party often requires compromises and the adoption of some party platform positions. Kennedy’s alignment with the Libertarian Party would require him to find common ground on issues such as drug legalization, government regulation, and foreign policy. It remains to be seen how comfortable Kennedy would be with these potential trade-offs.
Ultimately, Kennedy’s willingness to explore the possibility of joining the Libertarian Party showcases his commitment to challenging the status quo and finding innovative ways to effect change. Whether or not this alliance comes to fruition, it is clear that Kennedy is determined to make his mark on the political landscape and offer voters a genuine alternative to the traditional party lines.
As the November election draws nearer, the political landscape continues to evolve, and independent candidates like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are making their presence known. Only time will tell what impact they will have on the outcome of the election, but their willingness to break away from the established norms is commendable and should be celebrated in a democracy that values diverse representation and choice.
