Chiefs dominate Ravens, secure Super Bowl comeback
January 28, 2024 – 8:21 PM PST
The Kansas City Chiefs are constantly in the spotlight, with Patrick Mahomes leading the way as their star quarterback.
But when it comes to big games, Mahomes proves time and time again that he’s the best quarterback to have on your side.
Mahomes now holds a remarkable 14-3 record as a starting quarterback in the postseason, and the Chiefs have secured their spot in the Super Bowl for the fourth time in five seasons. They clinched their spot with a 17-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.
The Ravens, who were the top seed, struggled with turnovers while the Chiefs played a flawless game, securing their second consecutive road win. In the previous round, Kansas City defeated the Buffalo Bills 27-24.
“We’ve been labeled as underdogs in the past few games, but we never see ourselves that way,” Mahomes confidently stated. “We have a team full of winners, and when the playoffs arrive, we know we’ll make it happen.”
Travis Kelce had a standout performance, catching a touchdown pass and setting the NFL postseason record for receptions with 11 catches for 116 yards.
Kelce now has a total of 156 career postseason receptions, surpassing the legendary Jerry Rice (151). He also matched Rice’s record with his eighth career 100-yard receiving game in the playoffs.
The Chiefs will face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Feb. 11 in Las Vegas. San Francisco secured their spot by defeating the Detroit Lions 34-31 in the NFC Championship Game.
“For me, it’s not just about reaching the destination, but the journey to get there,” said defensive end Chris Jones, one of the many Chiefs players aiming for a second consecutive Super Bowl win.
Last season, Kansas City defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.
In the AFC Championship Game, Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes for 241 yards, while L’Jarius Sneed and Deon Bush made critical fourth-quarter takeaways for the Chiefs. Isiah Pacheco rushed for a touchdown.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had a decent performance, going 20-of-37 passing for 272 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also led the team in rushing with 54 yards but was sacked four times.
Although Jackson is a strong contender for the NFL MVP award, he didn’t showcase his best form in his first AFC Championship Game.
“I’m frustrated about the loss,” Jackson expressed. “We were just one game away from the Super Bowl. We’ve been waiting for this opportunity, and we fell short.”
Zay Flowers had a notable performance for the Ravens, catching five passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. However, he also lost a fumble while reaching for the goal line, resulting in a touchback for the Chiefs.
Baltimore’s Roquan Smith stood out on defense with 16 tackles, but the team’s three turnovers and penalties hindered their chances of victory.
“Today, we simply weren’t good enough,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh admitted. “Congratulations to the Chiefs for winning the game, but that doesn’t diminish what we’ve accomplished this year.
“We didn’t make enough plays to secure the win.”
The Ravens closed the gap to 17-10 with Justin Tucker’s 43-yard field goal with 2:34 left on the clock.
Any hope of getting the ball back vanished when Mahomes completed a 32-yard pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling just before the two-minute warning. The Chiefs then ran out the clock by taking a knee three times.
Baltimore missed a significant opportunity when Sneed forced Flowers to fumble at the Kansas City 1-yard line on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Chiefs’ Trent McDuffie recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchback.
On their next possession, the Ravens reached the Chiefs’ 25-yard line, but Jackson’s pass into triple coverage towards tight end Isaiah Likely was intercepted by Bush in the end zone with 6:45 left on the clock.
Kansas City dominated the Ravens, outgaining them 221-110 and taking a 17-7 lead at halftime.
The Chiefs struck first with Mahomes connecting on a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kelce with 7:41 left in the first quarter. This touchdown catch marked Kelce’s 19th in postseason play, leaving him just three short of Rice’s record.
Baltimore quickly equalized less than three minutes later when Jackson threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Flowers. Jackson evaded a sack attempt and found Flowers behind the Kansas City defense.
The Chiefs regained the lead with Pacheco’s 2-yard rushing touchdown with 10:56 remaining in the second quarter. Kansas City showcased their dominance, marching 75 yards on 16 plays in a time-consuming 9 minutes and 2 seconds.
Harrison Butker added a 52-yard field goal with four seconds left in the first half.
